I think it's a mixture of a trend of higher poverty and a more traditional English cuisine up North. Lots of stodgy foods, butties, yorkshire puddings, pies etc. Easier to put on weight eating that.
Down south = Greater variety and popularity of international foods. Japanese food is quite popular in my circle and that's really light and low fat.

This north south divide is the most ficticious piece of crap i've ever heard TSR and the media like to make out the south is full of "yummy mummies" and pefect skinny intelligent privately schooled people, and its really not. Its broadly similar to the rest of England, not to mention some of the most affluent areas in the country are up North. Golden triangle anyone?
Exactly, ever been to Harrogate, or Ilkley, North Leeds, York and so forth?

********, have you ever actually been up North? Leeds, Manchester .etc. have loads of international resterants, also people don't eat Yorkshire puddings constantly...does the Cornish diet simply consist of Cornish Pasties?

Rubbish, the supermarkets sell the same stuff.

Rubbish, the supermarkets sell the same stuff.

Calm down, calm down. I lived in Sheffield for 4 years. I didnt say that all Northern people eat stodgy food all the time, but certainly my Northern friends were a lot less adventurous with their eating and prefered to eat more simple food than my southern counterparts.

To quote one of them, "I don't like it when they ponce about with desserts, making them all fancy. Give me a jam sponge with custard anytime"

I quite prefer sponge puddings too but I do think that on average, tastes are a little more refined with regards to food, down south.

Of course there are people that eat more international food but I'm going by my coursemates and the people I worked with while I was living up there.

I'm sorry, but traditional foods have much of a stronger emphasis. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but they really seem to place more value on it up there.

Also, the supermarkets are distributed differently up North to how they are down south. For example, Waitrose has only fairly recently become a store featured up North and they stock many "deli" items that are a bit rarer/premium. Morrisons are much more a plenty up North and they stock, your more well known traditional brands and foods.

Even then, supermarkets of the same chain do not stock all the same things. They change what they stock by area and region dependant on what is performing better on their product lines, so there is a significant degree of tailoring to the tastes of the consumers living locally.

Ther are far more international deli food shops down south as well. Thats just because there seems to be more range of nationalities down here and they create more demand for really specialist food. (i.e eritrean cusine etc)

I think it might because theres more poverty in the North? And lower socioeconomic status can indicate poorer diet, and wages are generally higher on average in the south.
Did it ever occur to you that everything is generally cheaper up north, so your argument about lower wages falls down there. Id also like to know why you think poverty is greater in the north, the south is full of illegal immigrants sleeping in parks and phone boxes.

Because of all the effort and calories burnt by southerners pretending they're all privately educated.

Plus, operation Midline is being initiated. If we keep eating pies (cos that's obv all we can afford) then, eventually, we can tilt the country. With the south suspended in mid air, we can then bargain their release in exchange for their secrets on being so affluent and slim. Alas, the increased altitude will cause the temperature in the south to drop by 3 degrees, causing them all to moan for 2 weeks and then die.
