http://www.hostelworld.com/hostels/New-York is probably quite a good place to start... shows a load of reviews of places people have stayed and shows rough pricing too.

Have a look on hostelworld, I've been having a look on there recently to get an idea of what I'd be paying when I'm over there next year.

    Have fun!

Edit: Oh, I was too slow. Damn it.

the Chelsea international hostel is cheap, and in a fairly good location, although it is a bit grotty.

I'd recommend Candy Hostel (316 West 95th St - Upper West Side). Clean, modern, reasonably priced, friendly staff, and just a few minutes from 96th St subway station for the 1, 2 and 3 trains downtown.

I have stayed in the Hostelling International in NYC and its great. Clean, feels safe and is not too far from Colombia University so I guess the locals are used to seeing young studenty types around so you wont be marked out as a tourist so easily www.hinewyork.org

Another hostel that's highly recommended by one of my mates (who actually lives in NY at the moment) is L Hostels - we were going to stay there last year but it was full. Apparently it's really nice - they have regular events like pub crawls and bowling, and there's a lovely roof terrace. The only downside is its location just north of Central Park - maybe not the best if you're travelling alone, but if you're in a group then it's perfect.

Stayed there last year. Absolutely fine for me despite a Harlem location. If anything the locals were influential in places to go and things to see.
