    Hi guys

i was talking today with one of my new friends that will be joining with me on Morgan Stanley's graduate scheme this summer and he was very nervous about something.

For family reasons (and very good ones) he will be required to return to his country this summer and stay there for at least 10 months. So i told him to ask the company if he can defer his entry for next year's graduate scheme.

Is that a viable option, does it happen a lot normally like with University offers or is it a rare phenomenon? He really wouldnt want to call and do a bad impression, there is still a 5% chance that he might not have to return and hes afraid of calling HR and ask.

    Any experience on this?

If he asked and they said no, I really don't think they could retract his job offer over it. I know that some companies are happy to defer entry so it's really hard to say. Anyway, I doubt he'd have to give his name until after they'd answered his question.

So it is not actually an unusual thing right?

Just get him to call and explain the situation, say "there's a family issue which might mean I have to return home for a few months, if that does happen would there is a possibility of getting a deferred start for next year".
