At uni at the moment and probably on the pc for the majority of time between 9am - 2am doing work or whatever. Is prolonged use like this everyday going to cause permanent damage to my eyes?

Take regular breaks, for many reasons.

If you take regular breaks (say every 30 minutes you take a 5-10 minute break), have the brightness/contrast set right, and don't sit too close, then it shouldn't really do anything detrimental to your eyesight.

I use the computer a lot and my glasses get thicker every year.

one thing i'd say is make sure the brightness isn't set to full, unless it really has to be. other than that, take a break every 30 minutes, have a walk around etc, just make sure you aren't staring at the screen solidly for hours on end

any proof that the two are actually related?

No proof, just something I've realised. My eye doc also said it could be due to the fact that I'm still growing and so are my eyes so they'll keep getting worse for a while.
