Curiosity... I am considering it as a potential career.
Fair enough, seems a bit insecure to me. If you fancy the career apply for it, if you're any good the odds won't matter.

Don't think of the competition. Think of it more as a combination of these.

^ I would add 'knowledge' to that too. You can be a likeable person, go to a great university, and be captain of the university rugby team, but if you can't present yourself as someone who knows at least the basics of finance then you'll run into trouble.

So what is the crtieria when sorting out applications? Do they just go straight for oxbridge and leave everyone out? What about other good unis (Edinburgh, St Andrews, Durham, Warwick, UCL and LSE)? How much work experience do they require and what are suitable degrees are there to get into IB ?
More LSE grads in IB than Oxbridge. Warwick and UCL also provide a significant proportion of the graduate intake. With regards to work experiance, you dont need any, just a passion for the job which is showcased by obtaining internships. Suitable degrees - depends what you want to do. In general something maths based like Economics is a popular choice.

Also, What about a history degree? Is that like unusual in the banking world?

Unusual - yes, but this may be down to selection bias, afterall most history students would not consider a career in banking and thus would not apply. Although the general feeling is, the less relevent your degree is, the more your place of study matters. So provided everything else is in order, a history degree from Oxford would give you a good chance, whilst a history degree from York (still a good uni) would be a disadvantge.

Not in banking, no. The same goes for Geography and Politics.
