How much to pay instructor on test day?

Hi had my test today got a serious for pulling off and not checking my blind spot causing a car to slow down, but only got 5 minors. Anyway my instructor hadn't told me how much I would have to pay him, but from family and friends' experiences I took £40 - 1 lesson and the rest for the hire of the car. So when he dropped me off I gave him the money, and he said "it's £60 - £20 for insurance".

I have never heard of this and though learners were part of the instructor's insurance at all times.

Am I being conned - haven't paid the other £20 yet?

You shouldnt have to pay an extra £20 for insurance. as a learner driver you are insured to drive your instructors car anyway. x

I have never heard of that! You normally just pay for any lessons you have before and for the hire of the car. Try contacting the DVLA or something?

I had to pay 90 for the hire and for the lesson just before on my test day. maybe this insurance thing was already included however ive never heard of that.

afaik you shouldn't have to be paying that extra £20, when i took my test i had to pay £43 which is the same as a 2hr lesson (:
commiserations about your test, i'm sure you will be fine next time!

Mine was just 2 lessons worth - £18 for the lesson before and then another £18 for the time I had the car on the test.

Seems odd, on the day of my test I paid for two hours use of the car (ie £38).

WTF, did you take your test in a Lambo?

I paid for the lesson before hand, the test and the hour after the test in which i would be driven home. But not for the hire of the car during the test. So similar to everyone else.

Nope a Yaris, didnt ask questions as parents were paying :mmm: and instructor had a really high pass rate.

I paid £40 for the test, the hour before, and the drive home after (i.e. normal rates). Instructors' insurance is actually quite cheap. Mine was saying that, despite five accidents in as many years, he's still only on £1200 a year, not bad for a car with God knows how many learners going through it. The insurance thing should be BS. Only pay it if you really trust the guy and think he wouldn't be out to con you.

wouldnt you need to pay for the insurance before the test?
and if its a registered instructor then u would already have to be insured...nothing extra.
i only paid £50 for my 2 hours(1 hour b4 and 1 hour of test)

I paid £45 for my lesson beforehand and test, but it is his business and he can charge whatever he wishes for a test  a good guideline is to always ask beforehand

I paid £45 - One hour lesson before (£25), plus roughly one hour hire for the test/driving back home

I paid £12 for the hour before my test and for the test. Bargain.

You need to remember a driving instructor is self employed so he is charging you time while he is not working.
So its as follows,,, 1 hours lesson before test,,,,About 45 min for the test plus debrief afterwards which can be 1 hour all in.
Then he charges 1 more hour for the drive home. so 3 hours in all.
You must remember you are paying for their time
This is how its always been and will ailways be.

I got charged just for the hour, because my instructor was just ace.

Reply 17

I paid £20 a lesson, then paid £40 for the lesson before the test and the hour I would need my instructors car, the rest of my money went towards the test itself.

You shouldn't have to pay insurance! I paid £40 for 2 hour lesson before my test, and £62 for the test which I booked myself directly from the GOV website. Report him to DVLA! Imagine all of the other customers he is ripping off if he is doing the same to you.
The only time I gave my instructor extra money (£20) was because it was a thank you present for teaching me, and being a really good instructor and this was the day I passed my test.

You don't need to pay that extra £20 at all! I just paid the equivalent of two lessons, as I had an hour lesson beforehand
