I'm getting a bit confused here!

Potassium Manganate (VII) (so potassium permanganate) reacts with Methanoic acid and turns it from purple to colourless. So here rises two questions:

    1) Why does the same thing not happen for Ethanoic Acid?

2)Apparently the potassium permanganate oxidises the methanoic acid. I thought that carboxylic acids could not be oxidated? Isn't that the whole point in tests between aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids etc?

It would be great if you could give me a hand!

i will venture a guess, no actually i will give u some points that might lead u to the answer yourself because i am not completely sure and dont wanna mislead you.
First point i think definitely worth noting is that methanoic has a shorter carbon chain as compared to ethanoic. i.e., ethanoic is a stronger molecule by itself due to increased vander waals etcetera.
Next, carboxylic acids do have acidic properties when they are in solutions as the COOH group gives out an H+ ( proton donor) to form H+ and COO-.
It's a weak acid though, needless to say, as compared to stuff like hcl and blah de blah.
gd luck with it. Hope the information is AT LEAST relevant
