Definitely top 10% - consider all the children, then all the disabled people etc it will all add up.
    Probably top 5%.
Yeah, its not like disabled people with, say, neuro-muscular dystrophy for example have any kind of intelligence...

I don't think that I'm particularly intelligent. I always get the top grades, but I don't think that's intelligent. I just think that's having a young brain that can retain a hell of a lot of information! Plus, would people say that certain subjects make people more intelligent than others? Because I believe that someone can be creatively intelligent or academically intelligent, yet neither one is better than the other, as they are both masterminds in their own specialist area. I don't think the intelligence of people can ever truly be measured either. They say that people who go on to higher education are in a top % of the country's intelligence, but then again there are many intelligent people who maybe are not given the opportunity (whether it be in your own country or in another country). I guess it brings about the whole debate of nature vs nurture. The more nurtured an individual is, the more intelligent they are going to seem. Yet, maybe someone who was raised in a completely different environment would have been a lot more intelligent had they received the same nurturing.

I went with top 60-70%. I guess that sounds about right. I really don't know to be honest.

Top 1%? That's one in a hundred people is cleverer than you. It's actually not that remarkable given the size of the population.
    one in a hundred maximum
how do you know where they place themselves in the top 1%?

lol at all the people who think a stupid IQ test means anything whatsoever. Virtually everyone I know gets 160+ on the stupid mensa test. It's a piece of piss.

If you get a 1st in a tough subject from a top 10 uni you're pretty smart. If you then follow that up with a successful PhD you're now one of the smartest people in the country in my opinion. Of course, this has nothing to do with the route I followed myself...

I would definitely say that I am in the top 1%.
This is not bragging at all, but thinking about my school year from year 11, which had about 300 pupils, I am pretty sure that I was one of the 3 best pupils. This was a better than average state school.
Oh, yeah... because you have to be really intelligent to be under the top 1% at school

    (Original post by bmt)
How many people do you think there are that are in the top few % but squander it and waste it?
At least 2/3s. Being smart makes life easier, being highly intelligent makes it often harder.

    (Original post by foxyamy)
Well my Mensa certificate says in the top 1% so who am I to argue?!
Being a Mensa member, you should know that IQ does not equal intelligence...

    (Original post by Talveer)
People who say they are in the top 1% are lying.

Only the extremely gifted(I.E those genius kids who take degrees at age of 12) are in the top 1%
    Sigh.

Lol good ol' NAGTY. My IQ test/education says I'm in the top 5%, but I ****** up my education and will now be seen around the top 50% by employers/universities.

IQ = 145, which, according to http://wilderdom.com/intelligence/IQWhatScoresMean.html, puts me in the top 0.25%. Lol'd.
You're aware that there are different scales?!

    (Original post by SpamBa)
That test cannot have been accurate. A standard IQ test can only measure up to 170, and IQs above that (like Stephen Hawking) can only be estimated.
    See above.

    HI!

Whatever % bracket is smart enough to know what ******** IQ tests are. I'm dying on the inside every time I see them referenced to as some measure of intelligence.

Here's the low-down; it measures your ability to take IQ tests, that's about it.

    Yours sincerely,
From the people who are cleverer then you.
Thank you for pointing that out!

To be honest, a large proportion of TSRers will be in the top 1% (myself included). It only means that you're cleverer than one in every hundred people - not a massive amount.

It's not being arrogant, it's relying on hard statistics.
Actually, it means that you're the one in a hundred (or under the top 10 in 1000).

However, I agree, it's not that amazing. You still get to know so many more people that are brighter - if you look at the right places, that is.

Yes (e.g. ability to speak in more sophisticated ways), but it's not only about seeming more intelligent. Intelligence, in terms of IQ and "talent" needs nurture. If it's not trained in the first couple of years, you will never be able to use your full genetic potential. It's about the growth process of the brain as far as I understood. However, even the best nurture will not make you more intelligent that you're able to get (wow, what a redundant statement) - it will just make you seem that way.

I thoroughly disagree about the first part. Getting a First from a good university doesn't mean much. Except for you being able to study hard. University is about intense studying.

Having a PhD means that you're either quite intelligent or that you're under the top ~40% and have a huge interest in a specific topic or just don't want to work properly.

Taking IQ as a very rough measure (which I don't like, but what else should you use?), a IQ in the top 15% - 5% is generally seen as the best bet for being successful in your life (having a decent job, being able to understand how things work in a basic way etc.). You can do so when you're less intelligent, but you have to work harder. When you're more intelligent, you are generally able to accomplish more, but the drawbacks and risks of being unhappy/less successful are more significant also.

well according to my school, the very fact that I was one of the 'select few' who passed the entrance test puts me and the other 180 people in my year in the top 2% of the population. Having given up maths after gcse, I now struggle to explain my sister's year 9/10 level homework. Therefore, I think my school talks bull.

If they are doing it terms of educational achievement top 2% would be roughly equivalent to getting a 1st at university rather than getting into a grammar school lol.

"this is not just another grammar school blah blah blah excellence blah blah school of the year blah blah"
^we were fed crap like that day in day out. I'm aware that it means nothing, and from some of the things people used to come out with it's pretty surprising that the headmaster could even justify saying it...

By saying you're the top 10% isn't really as arrogant as some people are making it out to be. There are some real idiots in the world and unfortunately quite a lot of them. Considering the fact that TSR is an academic forum, I would imagine the majority of TSR fits into the top 25% at least.
