GIRLS, Do hair extensions damage and stop your hair and stop it from growing?

Okay girls,
I used to have really long hair (nearly up to my bum) but I hadn't had it cut in quite a while so it was quite damaged. But yeah I finally went to the hairdressers, asked for a trim where she promised to only take a bit of the length off. We was chatting away and when she said she was done half my hair had gone! she had chopped it off like up to my shoulders and I was so upset. So I went staight to the hair extension shop and brought some extensions the length my hair was and thought Id be fine and it would just grow back.

Now Im so confused because 8/9 months on, my hair was made no effort to grow. Im mixed race so naturally I have curly hair, which I used to like but now I Cant really wear it natural because it wont suit with the exstensions, and it just looks damaged in general now :/ But because Im wearing extensions I just wash it about once every 5 days ish, dry and straighten it on that day only, put my extension in then I just plait my hair at night so its wavy for the next day. I would of thought my hair would have grown loads because Im not hardly straightening it anymore, only roughly once a week really, but it just hasn't grown at all :/ I don't understand because Iv always had long hair, but since that silly hairdresser chopped it all off it hasnt really grown back.

Was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Anyone know if extensions (Clip in ones by the way) damage and stop your hair from growing? And any tips to make your hair grow faster?

I really would appreciate any feedback people can give because it just upsets me everytime I see my hair without exstensions, compared to what it used to be :frown:

Thanks x x

I don't know lol, thats what I was asking. I sleep in them though so I was thinking maybe the clips like damge the roots or something. Im no scientist, all I know is in 3 quarters of a year my hair has hardly grown and is jus gross and damaged, where as before I started wearing extensions it was good condition and grew really fast :/

Clip ins do not stop hair growth at all.
I've worn a full head of clip ins very regularly for 2 years.
Human hair, 18inch.

I Really wouldnt sleep in them though.. just for comfort reasons, and that your movement in bed will probably damage the hair.

If anything, my hair has grown much more quickly since wearing them.

I've also found that, though unrelated to this thread, taking over-the-counter hair, skin and nails vitamin supplements speeds up hair growth!

Good luck finding a good set!
i dunno, but the way you describe it it sounds like you have really nice hair anyway! why don't you leave it? i have never ever seen one case where someone has hair extensions that look anywherre near as good as their hair usually looks!
Sorry, I don't really know about fusion hair extensions, but I have heard that they can be damaging, especially if you don't take care of your hair properly. Maybe you should give them a rest and just spend a few months at least, babying your hair with deep condition treatments? Are you part black? If so, check out the longhaircareforum website for loads of great tips on how to take care of dry/really curly hair. Otherwise just search around the net for tips, I'm sure you'll find some. Hope that helped, and good luck
You wear them when you're asleep? Ugh, mine are so uncomfy. I can never be arsed with them anymore.

I don't think that they damage the hair, not from anything I've heard anyway. Although, they tend to make my hair feel greasier after a day's wear. I have no idea how you can get away with washing your hair every FIVE DAYS. I have to wash mine at least every second day or it just looks crap.
It's the glue in ones that cause damage.
I saw a girl on america's next top model with glue in ones,
all her hair was matted....bleugh.

Aww thanks for all the replies girls  But yeah I sleep in them and I really dont have any discomfort at all lol.. But Sequin I see what your saying, I thought that might be the case too, but I kind of need to sleep in them because I do 3 french plait every night to make my hair wavyish/curlyish for the next day :/ hmm. And thanks Miranda, Im not gonna lie I use to love my hair but now Its just awful with no exstensions, I have to rush past the mirror if I dont have them in lol. And yeah like every 5days to be honest cause if I wash it like alot more often it just goes even drier which isnt good :/ And yeah Cherry, half jamaican quarter english quarter belgian lol, so thanks I will check that out. And sequin, tar for the hair vitimins tip, Im goin straight to boots tomorow to purchase some  lol
Thanks again girls much apprieciated x x x
OH GOD STOP IT NOW! I had clip in hair extensions and thought they were way less harmful than the glue in or sew in ones. How every wrong I was!

I wore them like every day for about 6 months, I didnt sleep in them though, thats even worse! Anyway, one day I noticed that where they were pulling on my hair where the clips were, I had two massive bald patched either side of my head! That was the day before my 19th birthday too =( Bad times!

So yes, if I were you I would stop wearing them NOW. I was luck, I was told my hair follicles were still visible so the hair would grow back, but it is nowhere near as long or as thick as the rest of my hair is.

The moral of the story: Only wear them once in a while, and never for more than 5/6 hours (according to the small print in my booklet I didnt see at the time!)

 Oh my goshh! I cant beleive this! I wear them like all day every day! And my hair is a lot thinner than it was but i thought that was down to starightening in the past. Wow im in utter shock! I dont know waht im gonna do because my hair is just too disgusting to wear without extensions :frown: What about if I got them sowed in? Do you think theylle have the same dangers?
And thanks for the reply by the way x x
As a child I was always told ''hair extensions make your hair grow''. I had them twice and I noticed bugger all growth. The whole hype nowadays of having hair extensions is just nuts! At one stage I was considering having them in again, just to do something different with my hair. BUT after watching 'Jamelia's Whose Hair is it anyway' - I have completely gone off hair extensions. And im sure if many of you watched it, you'd be put off them for life!!!

IMO OP i think you should just leave your hair alone and let it grow naturally. Try searching on the internet for natural hair growth methods and etc - its what I have done and now have bra strap length hair (my hair was by my ears Sept 2008!) . .

I know, it was awful! I wanted to cry, I thought all my hair was going to fall out! It was weird not having them in at first, I felt like my hair looked horrible, but then I realised it was only me who cared, and I would rather have a full head of hair than end up with lots of bald patches!

Its down to the tension of the clips on your hair, and when you brush them or sleep in them it tugs on the clip, which in turn tugs on your hair and can break it out and even kill the follicle! I would suggest that you just take the vitamin pills mentioned earlier in the thread, and maybe visit a different hair dresser and ask them to give you a nicer style. Not to cut off any length, just style your hair a bit so it sits better. I hated having shoulder length hair, it was such an awkward length to do stuff with! Thats why I got extensions too.

Seriously though, just bin the things! It really isn't worth it, and not long after I stopped wearing mine my hair started to grow a little better, and now (a few months later) its almost the same length the extensions made my hair (mine kind of sat at about nipple height, to put it bluntly!). Try just wearing your hair up, experiment with some new styles etc....

I just find it yucky, extremely itchy and a chore to look after. Yes Jamelia use to wear hair extensions, but after the documentary she did, she no longer does. It was aired last summer. Basically she wanted to trace where her hair extensions came from. She managed to do it, but the poor people who get paid crap money for their hair is just disgusting and to see what people sacrifice for ''extension lovers'' is just unbelievable. It brought a tear to my eye, seeing children having their heads shaved/hair cut off and sold on for next to nothing. Her documentary even showed people rummaging in the rubbish bins for hair (that comes out of combs) to sell to get a couple of pence for it!! Its just absolutely disgusting, for which a lot of women in the UK are clueless about because they ''want to look good''.
If I can find the documentary (doubt I can) I will post it.

As for my hair, I just ditched a lot of hair products and now use one brand only. I also use egg in my hair once a month which IMO is the key ingredient to making my hair thick, shinery and grow like the clappers! . . .

I wear Hair extensions... love them. Both clip ins & sewn in. The sewn have helped with hair growth, but it's painfull to have them put in. Pain lasts while they are being put in. The clip ins are a good quick fix to my hair. Let's face it, I really don't know how to style my own hair as it is, so need the extensions to complete a look. So shoot me.
I also watched the clip by Jamelia. No, she didn't stop wearing extensions after that. She said she would be more weary of where they come from when buying. Most of the people on that film insisted that they have their hair cut out of tradition & most importantly, religion. I remember this woman saying that she is hoping for good things to come into her life and the one thing that she really has to do is shave her head. So she did, and sold her hair. Her act was like fasting. Same way some people fast, they shave their heads. Jamelia asked her if it's not her husband who was pushing her to shave her hair and she said no. Even the kids, they have been born into this. I must say I was saddened by the little girls shaved heads, and I thought they should at least be old enough to decide for themselves.
Just try not to sleep in the clip ins. They are likely to tag on you hair and this 'pulls' it out. Ta!
oh god they so do about 3 years ago i had to have my hair cut well shaved off for reasons, after it grew to a bob i got clip in extensions and imo i look like a boy without them, today my hair is only just reaching the nape of my neck,3 YEARS!!!!i used to have really long curly hair that grew ridiculously fast and now it has to be straightened because the curls are so tight i look like an old granny :frown:
trying to stop wearing them now but i know what you mean after seeing urself with long lovely hair soo hard to go back ,i know im struggling!
best of luck xxx

i know exactly how you feel i have the exact same problem, i have really curly hair aswell and it used to grow really fast because im mainly turkish my mum was part african and my dad was turkish. my mum had frizzy curly hair which was very thick and for some odd reason my dad had an AFRO him being turkish? i dont know but when i was younger i had really long frizzy curly hair but i hated it because i couldnt conmtrol it and i also didnt realise how nice my hair was if i learny how to control it back then and all the other girls in my year had short straight/wavy hair so i cut my hair lol because thats what all the others girls were doing without realising the obvious point that my hair is a completley different type of hair and that it wasnt going to turn out like theirs ...this was two years ago. ever since i cut my hair i have been becoming more conscious of my appearence and ever since ive been wearing hair exstensions cause my sister wore them and her hair was healthy but yet again hers was not as frizzy and curly as miine. i wore hair extensions for a year and a half but my real hair hadnt griwn it just git more split, i didnt understand i blame it on the straighteners but i put heat defense on all the time but i guess it still damages hair. anyway i cut my hair again because this time it was terribly split and thin also it looked like my hair was feathered and it wasnt it was just really really split and BUT now i only straightened and worn hair extensinons on special occasions and my hair thickness has almost grown fully back and its only been 4 months the length hasnt grown length wise much but my split ends have certainly gone and about five days ago i trimmed my hair as you do and its probably just me but I SWEAR its already grown in length ha ....now i feel that my hair is repairing and going back to what it used to be. but i have been daring to wear my extensions again and again because well this is my own personal opinion on my self but im quite a big girl and i find that long hair is more slimming than short if you know what i mean and im tempted to wear them BUT i tell myself DONT lol leave you hair how it is and yes maybe have one ugly year but you wont regret it because that means you wont have to suffer short thin hair for long soo my advice is just sacrifice this year to let your hair be natural and eperiment with your hair so when in a years time it will be much longer and be able to handle you hair better well thats what i do i hope this helps
OH btw i think clip in hair extensions only damaged our sort of hair because of the curls and the hair being naturally dry thereforre more lkely to break (well my hair is) but if you have straight and well moistered hair clip ins wouldmt stop your hair growth << sorry for writing soo much its just i get very conscious about hair and i think its really important for a girl to feel comfortable with herself and feel good  xxxxx

when i was younger i cut ma hair really badly so now i wear extensions. at first it looked like nothing was happening then after a while friends started telling me my hair was growing and after a while i noticed it too..and im black (u kno how long it takes black hair to grow) i usually kanerow ma hair and sew the extension in and leave it in for 6-8 weeks, its a long time and ur hair obviously wont get washed in a long time but its worth it as it does grow. (bearing in mind that i treat and trim my hair b4 i out it back in)...hope it helps
