Hi, uhm I've posted this question somewhere in yahoo answers too... but I haven't been getting any replies yet. And I'm pretty confused and ... and i guess I can't just stop pondering about my questions.

Anyway here it is, I'm lazy so I'll just paste it here :

Definitions please? I'm a little confused here.
I understand that nuclear fission can occur with or without neutron bombardment.
But I am confused as to what proton bombardment is.

Like I have 2 examples in mind that I think are proton bombardment but i need someone to clarify with me..
I'm in a really crappy chemistry class...i really don't know who to turn to for help.

Anyways, A hydrogen nuclei collides with another hydrogen nuclei and it loses a positron, in this process it's charge becomes neutral and becomes a neutron. So that's how Deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen is formed. So,the proton here is split to a neutron while it releases a positron.
    Is this proton bombardment?

The other example i have in mind is this, beta decay?
Unstable isotopes go through beta decay, a neutron of that isotope splits into a proton and an electron which also in other words is a negative beta particle.. to form a more stable element\isotope.
    Is this proton bombardment?

If both of them are not, why so? And what is proton bombardment then?
=) Thanks to whoever replies my question, really confused here.

Proton bombardment just means hitting stuff with protons (a hydrogen nucleus) so the first example you gave could be called proton bombardment by other protons (to form 2H)

The second example is a decay and no bombardment takes place here just that a proton is the product of the decay
