Dissolving in acid or basic conditions

Im having trouble predicting whether penicillin and barbitone (separately) would dissolve in acidic and basic conditions.

Im supposed to relate it to their structure.

Can anyone help me please?
If there is an acidic group then a base will make it a salt and thus soluble in an aqueous solution - the reverse is true for basic groups :smile:
Are amide groups acidic or basic?

Can I also ask another few questions?
Say I added 5ml of 5N NaOH to a drug.
The solution is now basic yes?

If I then added HCl dropwise until the pH was 2, is the solution neutral or acidic?

And then if I addded NaOH dropwise until the pH was 12, is it now neural or basic?
It all depends on the pH whether it is acidic or basic...

pH < 7 acidic
pH > 7 alkaline
