I was just wondering if there is a lot of prejudice towards gay people in big campus universities.

Is there anyone out there that can share their experiences?

Students are some of the most liberal people I think you are ever likely to meet.

Although being an engineer I only know lesbians at uni.

there will be predjuduce against homosexuals no matter where you go, alot people are just not excepting of the different people in thier community, you may find in most uni's the students are lot more understanding as many you'll find are homosexuals themesleves, but there will still be the ones that name call and hunt you to pick on you.

I was just asking on behalf of a friend who is really worried. He's completely in the closet (bar me) and I keep telling him there is nothing to worry about but he seems convinced it would be hard to 'come out' at uni.

When you say 'friend' you don't happen to be referring to yourself, by any chance?

there are thousands of lesbians on my campus...no one says anything thou, might be something to do with the fact that they're huge....

aint heard of anyone being gay..

but (nearly) everyone's accepted for who they are- you've never known any different.

People at uni are no different than anywhere else. The nice thing is that a lot of unis offer support like LGB phonelines etc... as well as societies where LGB people can meet up and socialise, discuss issues etc...

There's nothing further more to fear from being LGB at uni.

most likely it will be easier for him to come out in uni as he'll find there will be alot of understanding people who can help him ease the 'transition' he'll find it alot easier there than anywhere else, and most likely meet alot of other homosexuals who can help him, as well as you, he'll need your support.

You're not the only one thinking that Ralf. The other friend who knows, does he have a sore bottom?

A lot of people use their new found independence at uni to have a fresh start. A lot of people feel more comfortable coming out at uni where noone knows them than they would do at home.

I used to feel quite uncomfortable when gay people used to talk to me about being gay because I didnt know what to say. I was scared of looking like a homophobe and used to end up looking like one anyway - or at least like somebody who thought it makes a difference.

I dont know any gay these days but I'm sure I would react a lot better.

I felt EXACTLY the same! They were asking me for advice and stuff and I really didn't know what to say. They didnt tell me face to face but online, which was better I suppose.
