    hokay,
so as the title says, im looking for a 1TB hard drive to replace the standard 300GB one that comes in a Sky HD box

boring waffle to get out the way:
yes, 1GB, nothing larger, nothing less.
i know it invalids the warranty, but its nearly 3 years old now.

since it is going to be sitting in the living room, i don't need a performance drive.
i need something that is quiet mostly, and preferably a 'green' model.

while i have looked on the WD, Seagate and Samsung websites, their so called AV hard drives are hard to come by on ebuyer, scan, overclockers etc.

so if you do find a hard drive, a link to where i can buy it would be useful

Just had a check on this , seems very few 1tb drives about at the minute and from memory there is a firmware bug with drives above that size?

    that said

yes, some people have reported problems with hard drives greater than 1TB.
also, sky have started selling boxes with 1TB drives now, so that is why i've chosen 1TB.

    woah 64MB cache:eek:
what made you pick that drive?

    according to the WD site:
    Acoustics
    Idle Mode- 24 dBA (average)
Seek Mode 0- 33 dBA (average)
Seek Mode 3- 29 dBA (average)

i previously looked at these drives:
    WD
    seagate
samsung (couldn't provide a direct link)

the seagate i think is the quietest: 21/24dB

well, Sky boxes don't have hard drives.
Sky HD and Sky+ boxes do.

google is the answer, replace sky hd hard drive produces many guides with pictures.

however the key is a quiet hard drive, there is nothing more annoying than clicking throughout all your programs

Sky are going to be introducing a 1TB version of their Sky HD box soon. So, my advice is not to replace the hard-drive yet just yet.

you can already get the 1TB version, it is a totally new box. it costs £250.
why shell out that much when i can get a 1TB drive for £80 max?

this is why i chose 1TB, because it is what sky will put in the new boxes

Far enough. I just thought that you might want to consider it because it will void your warranty, but spending £80 on a hard-drive will be a lot cheaper in the long run if the box doesn't go wrong. And I didn't know the 1TB boxes have already come out. Thanks for telling me though.

why the F2 over the F3?
When just serving up recorded media you don't need the speed of the F3, and the F2 is cheaper, quieter and uses less power.

I don't think you are supposed to do this, Sky own the box.
