I live in Sweden and get free Swedish lessons which are presumably funded by the tax-payer. It makes me far more likely to get a job here and thus contribute to the economy.

In Camden you can already get free English lessons at the community college if English isn't your first language. But I'd have to pay ridiculous course fees to try and learn another language.

'necessity' is the word that springs to mind.
I think this is a good idea. If I'm going to live in an area with a high immigrant population, then I'd rather they spoke English.

Same for english-speaking people who emigrate to most non-english-speaking countries, really. We feel good because we can get FREE (or at least subsidised) language lessons TO FIT IN and live more easily in that society whose first language is not English. COME ON, ENGLAND!!
