resting heart rate too high?

medics....

if my resting heart rate is 96 beats per minute is that anything to be worried about/do something about? I remember way back in primary school we had to measure it before and after exercise and mine was pretty high in the class for both so I measured it just now, according to the measures I can find online 96 seems high, and worse than I thought. Does it really matter? Incidentally, a doctor recently took my blood pressure and told me it was fairly low, nothing to worry about, just lower than most people.

I have an appointment with my gp tomorrow afternoon for something else and I could ask then...but I don't want to sound over-paranoid!

thanks, Emily x

check it a few times for starters, I always end up with different values when I do my resting heart rate but mine is also rather high.

Just means you're unfit. Or are you quite small?
arent, you supposed to take your age from 240, and that works out the highest number of beats your supposed to take per minute, if its 96 then you should be worried but otherwise don't

theres something called a normal range. i think the normal range for heartbeat is something like 60-100.
thing about 'normal' ranges though and 'normal' itself is by definition it is only normal for something like 96% of the population. That means something like 4% of the population have a heartbeat, or a blood glucose level, or respiratory rate, or blood p[ressure (etc etc) which is classified medically as 'abnormal' but is perfectly healthy for them.

don't worry so much. you're just one of those special few

I think you take it away from 200, and that's your maximum heart rate, as if you were running at full sprint. My resting heart rate is around 80 the last time I checked and I'm pretty unfit.

id be totally unsatisfied with a resting heartrate of 96bpm tbh

it would be super ownage to get like 50, or even lower - thats hardcore as ****
my resting heart rate is 61

Even flat out exercise, never goes above 150

96bpm is a bit high, what height/weight are you?

Average untrained heart-rate for a male is 70-80bpm I think, for females I think its a bit higher.

Its all individual though, some people like me have low untrained heart-rates, which means your heart-rate can get to silly low levels, my resting heart rate is 44bpm at the moment, thats only 2bpm higher than bradley mcgee(tour de france cyclist) but I'm nowhere near as fit as him! So its all genetic basically, oh and also bigger people have lower heart-rates generally, and smaller people higher.

I was hitting 158 in the gym this morning. After a good workout on the crosstrainer
I'll have to check my resting rate tomorrow morning.

Although again, max heart rate is individual and decreases with age, at 18, no matter how hard 150bpm feels, you can go lots faster than that:smile:

rah 60! lol, i reach 170ish tho  . apparently you can be TOO fit, which basically means your heart rate is too slow. doctors end up ordering you never to do exercise again! lol i doubt thats going to happen to anyone here anytime soon

It varies from person to person, eg, mine is particularly low when i was in full rowing training at 15 it was 37, but my HR doesnt exceed 190 even in extreme conditions, whereas most of the other rowers had higher resting and would go higher when working flat out.

If you're really worried talk to the GP

Atfer reading all of these heart rates, perphaps i'm fitter than i thought hehe..

High heart rate doesn't mean anything on its own. Most small birds have a heart rate of up to 1000 beats per minute. Hert rate depends on your age, usually children have higher heart rate

Ye i guessed that, but 190 is a very high heart rate when exercising aswell.
Resting: before cycling season is usually 68.
Resting in season:50.

Full sprint (70kmh)= 200 Ouch! That hurts i can tell you.

Why do you get "stitches" when you do a sport that you're not used to but is still highly cardio? Like swapping from cycling to running?
