(Sorry if these are stupid but I have some questions about graduate courses)

Why do the majority of people take graduate courses?
For most careers do you need to have a graduate degree or whatever it is called? If so which ones mainly?
Can you still get a student loan ?

Many people take postgrad courses because they want to specialise further on what they did at undergrad, or they might want to work in academia, or they might simply not want to get a job yet. All sorts of reasons!
There are very few careers where you need a postgraduate qualification.
No you don't get a student loan. A few people get funding from their univerisities or Research Councils, but the majority have to pay for it themselves.

The main reason for doing a postgraduate course is if you want to go into academia. You won't get a student loan, but the government do offer career development loans, which are similar I think. If you are wanting to do a masters then you will probably find it hard to get a place on a funded one, there are a few but they are competitive, but depending on your subject, you should be able to get a funded place on a PhD. Aside from academic careers, I can't think of any that absolutely require a post graduate degree.

Just to clarify something Xenopus said, career development loans are not from the government, they are from banks and are just like any other loan. You have to apply and are not guaranteed to be accepted.
