Slimtan

I'm going to sound like a true Liverpudlian girl in this thread...

When I went to the sunbeds the other day, I had to wait to go on, and noticed a pretty coloured bottle - Slimtan. It's apparently a thermogenic fat burner and tan accelerator. It contains "L-carnitine" and "L-tyrosine", whatever they are.

Anyway, it says it increases the melanin production to achieve a faster longer lasting tan to maximise tanning sessions, and does so by the oxidation of tyrosine (which is apparently an amino acid), and this is greatly enhanced by exposure to UV light (ie sunbeds).

Well this was on Thursday and I've lost three pounds despite a huge curry and drinking myself into oblivion on Friday and eating a load of crap on Saturday to counteract the world's worst hangover.

But...does this actually work, or is it a kind of placebo effect making me think I'm not hungry?

And can a biologist tell me if the stuff about the melanin and oxidation is true?

Not sure about the tanning part of it, but there are hundereds of fat buring products. Several different types, e.g. speed up your metabolic rate, make you feel fuller guickly so you wont eat as much, etc. Some may work, others wont.
L-carnitine is the peptide of the amino acid Carnitine. It is mean to help metabolize food into energy.

L-Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid and plays an important role in the production of the neurotransmitters dopamine & norepinephrine as well as a precursor for adrenaline.

L-Tyrosine in more Detail
A hard training athlete\bodybuilder may benefit from supplementing with L-tyrosine as is a precursor of Dopamine which could help to counter fatigue & the stresses associated with intense & heavy workouts.

Suggested Use for L-Tyrosine
As a dietary supplement consume 0.5 grams of l-Tyrosine 1 to 2 times daily.

Acetyl L-carnitine (ALCAR) is derived from the lysine & methionine amino-acids. It is mainly synthesized in the liver and the kidneys, and must be transported for use to other tissues in the body. It is found in highest levels in tissues that use fatty acids as the main fuel, for example the skeletal and cardiac muscles.

L-carnitine and Acetyl L-carnitine have backed claims of anti-aging and nutrient regenerating properties and the effects of supplementing with them have been extensively researched in many areas including exercise performance, weight loss, treatment of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, diabetic depression and many other neurological disorders.

Acetyl L-carnitine (ALCAR) in more detail
L-carnitine plays an important role in the production of energy.
It can help assist with weight-loss.
Improve your mental performance, giving you a much clearer focus.
Has anti-aging properties..
Is used to support all your bodily functions that require a high amount of energy.
Even at higher than recommended doses L-carnitine has no side-effects and is well known to be a safe supplement to use.

Suggested Use for Acetyl L-carnitine (ALCAR)
For the best results consume 1 gram to 2 grams of ALCAR up-to 2 or 3 times daily.

I don't know what they have to do with tanning, but thats what their recommended bodybuilding/sports use is. Hope this helps. Incidently you're probably paying extorionate amounts for this stuff, how much did you pay and for how many grammes?

I naturally have high melanin and so I tan on the first day in the sun. I didn't know it could be artificially produced, or induced should I say. But if it can I don't see the harm in doing it.

Of course check with a doctor or pharmacist before trying it, I could be wrong. BTW I have high melanin cos part of my family is Italian  My mum and sister and I dont think anyone else has it, except my nan. It's a very dilute Italian in the bloodline. A tidbit for you.

 I am - I do Physics!!

Cheers for the info guys  Much much help. It has other ingredients, some are really random like mustard seed powder. It has Garcinia Cambogia and D-calcium Pantothenate which I think is B5.

I think they main effects will come from the tyrosine and carnitine, the calcium pantothenate is probably a transport system though I'm not really sure.
