So my dads clocked up alot of air miles and essentially has a free ticket to wherever I want to go as a result.

I jumped to the chance to take it, and want to go somewhere with great night life, bars but also being different to London at the same time. I want to socialise with different people etc, and this seems like the perfect chance to go.

The only problem is, my mates are either not 21 or lumbered with summer internships in July (which is the only time I'm free).

But I really am pretty keen on the whole seeing a new environment, new people, getting hammered in a club I havent been to a gazillion times for once, etc. Since I'm young, and I'l hopefully have internships in the next summers, I kinda feel this is the only chance so its almost as though I have no choice but to go alone.

Is it odd for a 21 year old guy to go abroad alone? Feels a bit loserish but that's the predicament I'm in

Also, which destinations are best to go for? I am pretty keen on America, so if anyone has any ideas of where's best there, or even anywhere else. The travel is pretty much free for me so it would be stupid not to take advantage of this in the summer.

No! i know quite a few people that have gone travelling on their own and had an amazing time. Sounds like America would be a good place for you though maybe New York? or Miami? But im sure you will have a good time wherever you go.

    I'm very jealous...

Well, if you're going on holiday then it's best to have someone to go with. But "travelling" though, I would only ever go "travelling" alone.

My travelling is always done alone. That sense of exclusivity about it, it's as if you and only you can experience what you are experiencing. If I want to discover somewhere I will categorically go alone. A holiday, rather, where you're not bothered about moving your arse from place to place, is best experienced with friends.

I dont see how your friends not being 21 has anything to do with it. Any age could go with you. Defo New York stay in a hostel as there $20 a night. or Hong kong

I think you should defo go. Many people go alone at your age, have a great time, make new friends and learn a lot about themselves and the new cultures they are exposed to. Go! Agree with Night_Hawk about the 21 thing :s

Sounds good, is New York expensive though? And yeah I'd love to 'travel' around some states in America. Would be freaking awesome, Forrest Gump style. But in a party sort of sense not a self discovery one!

If I want to travel across states for around 3 weeks, that must be pretty expensive too right? Anyone done anything similar? Maybe some of you guys can tell me about your experiences

    I agree with you:yep:
When you travel alone will be the leader of the trip in any place.

My mate did most of South America alone (e met one of his mates for a couple of weeks in Montevideo I think) and he absolutely loved it. Said it was incredible.

You thought about South America? If you fancy North America I'd say New York, definitely.

I think it's because you have to be 21 to drink in some American states.

Go to Thailand with friends- they'll be able to drink and you can go to one of the awesome full moon parties in Phuket

I interailed for 2 months on my own when I was 19.

Was the best time of my life, couch surfed all over Europe (www.couchsurfing.com).

Travelling alone is something I would definitely recommend. It forces you to be more adventurous and it means you don't have to make any compromises - like a travel partner wanting to do something different to you.

Hey I'm going to the US in the summer too! High five! o/

Me and a mate of mine are going to stay in NYC for a week then make our way to San Francisco in a zigzaggy sort of way. He's 22 and I'm 19 so I'm going to wear about three bras to make my way through the door.

You're welcome to join us, but keep in mind we're trying to take in all the sights of America without a car (insurance is expensive for under 25s) and not very much money, in case that doesn't go so well with you. Or we can just hang out if our plans line up. The invitation's open.

Sounds good! the lack of alot of funds is a tick in my box too. The destinations sound awesome and Id be more than happy to give it a go.

What are you going to be looking to get out of the trip though? bars/sights/shopping or something completely different? and how long you going for?

I was seeing what google had to offer and found a site called Trek America, they got some cool packages too.

If you stay in hostels you'll meet people who are up for a night out. I've never hostelled in America but I have in Europe and if you go to cities like Barcelona, Berlin etc there will be plenty of people to party with.
