If you have a blood test at the doctors that isn't just for anaemia, can they tell?

Edit: I should also ask that the other way round: if you go for a HIV test, can they tell if you have anaemia?

HIV test
http://www.avert.org/testing.htm

The first type of test is the HIV antibody test. This test shows whether a person has been infected with HIV, the virus which causes AIDS. Information on this page concentrates on HIV antibody testing.

The second type of test is P24 antigen testing. It is primarily used to screen the blood supply but in some places it is used for testing for HIV in individuals. P24 antigen is a protein that is part of the HIV. Early in the infection, it is produced in excess and can be detected in the blood serum by a commercial test. The P24 test can detect HIV infection before the HIV antibody test can. Therefore, P24 antigen testing is used in diagnosing HIV early in the course of infection.

for sickle cell, they either look for a gene, or they examine the RBCs.

They are not allowed to test you for HIV without your consent.
No.

You only find HIV if you look for it.
The HIV tests are simple as, but because of certain moral and cost issues (more moral than anything else) they aren't done on every blood sample unless specifically requested by the doc.
ok that makes sense

Um, considering the age at which you start having symptoms, having "good weeks/bad weeks" isn't going to hide that you have something wrong.

Obviously you'd still have to have a test to confirm it but it would be odd for it not to be done at a much younger age.

I suspect the OP is actually thinking of tests for sickle cell trait - symptoms usually only appear during conditions of low oxygen etc. so it's less easy to know you have it.

When I went for a blood test the doctor selected which tests the lab should run from my symptoms.

Could someone explain to me what the point of the last two posts on here is? I think I must be missing something.
Reply 17
My post: to say unless the lab are checking for it they won't pick it up.

Okay. You were just reiterating what the other posters said, pretty much. That's fair enough.
