Volunteering in Primary Schools

I really want to get some work experience in a Primary school as a classroom assistant, and I was wondering what would be the easiest way to go about this? Has anyone any experience of this?
I just rang them up and asked if I could have some work experience. Easy

Edit: You'll have to get a crb check though, the school should be able to give you the forms and everything and send it off for you.

Either look in your Thompson local and ring the numbers of local schools or go onto www.do-it.org and choose the 'Education' option on the drop down list, type in your postcode and see which local schools need voluntary teaching assistants (you don't usually need any prior experience/teaching qualifications).

Hello. Yes, I went in and spoke the the head teacher of my local primary school, and she said I could work voluntry. That was a year ago. Now I am doing an NV2 with their help, and loving every day there. Go for it, call them up and show that you are eager.
Best of luck.

Probably easiest if you can go to the primary school you attended. That's what I did and it was great because I already knew half of the teachers and the headmaster went really out of his way to help me.

I'll have to give that a go then! What was volunteering there like? What kind of things did they let you do, etc?

I'm pretty much a classroom assistant. I get to work with the children (Year 2's), helping them with their lessons and learning. It's great fun, and the children enjoy having me there to help them.
The teachers thank me for the help, and although I don't teach, I'm an extra hand, which is always helpful.
Just go and ask, I'm sure they will appreciate the help, and it's a good start on the road to becoming a teacher/assistant.
I haven't looked back. XD

hi i am looking aswell but i think if u contact them then they will say if they are taking anyone on coz i went to the primary school near me and they said thet they ant taking anyone on at the moment that is why i am looking online for a primary school in my area
OMG! I cannot believe somebody has found it easy! I have been trying to find a volunteer role for more than a month. Some schools haven't even bothered to take my cover letter; most of them have not bothered to reply to me and in one in particular, they were really really rude to me! For what people mention, they went to the schools they used to study as children first. Maybe that is the problem - I have recently moved to the UK and I don't have the local connections!

Same here I have applied to so many and most of them are rude and stern. I went to my kids primary school but they said they already have people working here to help out. It is my biggest worry. Someone please help
