The Coventry Carol is a good medieval carol.

I love the Sussex Carol ('On Christmas Day all Christians sing...'), and the tune to the Wessex Carol is lovely. Oh yes, and the Sans Day Carol is great too, as is 'It came upon a midnight clear'.

I love Christmas carols, they're so evocative!

Where the snow lays round about.

(So probably in Scotland (or Bulgaria?)
The historical King Wenceslas was King of Bohemia.

'Rio rio chio' is gorgeous. I don't know the words because it's in Spanish but when the male choir sing it on Christmas Eve...I just love it! Particularly the tenor solo bits.

Some proper carols, ie. not silly Christmas 'songs', are possibly some of the lovliest, most evocative pieces of western vocal music (particularly if you hear really good arrangements of them). I admit some carols, such as 'Good King Wenceslas', are hackneyed; but on the other hand, others are so great! Honestly, if you could hear some of the carols on a CD of mine (arranged by John Rutter), you would appreciate Christmas Carols as much as I do.

I agree! Do you agree about the ones I mentioned earlier?

no:

We three Kings of Orient are,
bearing gifts we've traveled afar,
field and fountain
moor and mountain
following yonder star

Ooooh
If we're being picky, it isn't a Christmas Carol... it's for epiphany

Has anyone else sang While Shephards Watched to the tune Ilkley Moor Bah-tat? It's great

Little donkey, little donkey
On a dusty road
Got to keep on plodding onwards
With the precious load.
Been a long time little donkey
Thro' the winter's night.
Don't give up now little donkey
Bethlehem's in sight.

Ring out those bells tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem.
Follow the star tonight
Bethlehem, Bethlehem.

ahh...
thats my favourite carol when we did the nativity in p1 i had to sing that all by myself....
