Nightshift at local supermarket

Having just come back from doing some chairty work abroad (missing every second of it now, nasty country this is) I phoned up two sainsburys today (which i've worked at in the past before at various times) looking for some temp work till late september.

They offered Nightshift work. first thing which went through my mind was "oh b*llocks, its come to this..." but thinking now i'm kinda coming round to it. 9pm-7am 4 shifts a week. £1.50 premium on top of usual wage (which was £5 last time i worked-however it might be 1.25premium, got to check)

I could earn around 240-250 quid a week. its just general stock replenishment. nothing difficult or fancy. Not v fun but no customers and less d*ckheads that you get working in these places.

so, anyone got any experience of it? what do you guys think? my sleeping would be screwed. but hey it was at uni... i could earn up to £1500 in time for uni, which is 5-6 months rent for my house...tempting!

meeting tomorrow afternoon to chat about it.

Not having done night shifts before I can't offer you my experiences on it.

However, I would honestly suggest you go for this. It will leave your days free for doing what you want to do, as well as sleeping. Plus it's only 4 nights a week, so that's still a few more days for you to go out for example.

The money seems good, and the best part is no customers. I've said this before, my job would be a lot better if there was no customers.

Plus it's only temporary.

Good luck in whatever you decide to go for.

Cheers, I'm going to go for it methinks. unless they say "no its actually £4 an hour." which isnt going to happen. altho i will argue so the days are spaced out a bit. and i dont work every saturday night. but yeah. looking for temp work now for 6/7 weeks is hard and depressing. and this will do.

My ex (I think :/ that's another thread really) does night shifts at Tesco. He hates it.

But he loathes everyone that he works with. You might click with some people there, and it'd be alright. So yeah, he hates it, but he gets paid loads, so he might like it by the end of the month, heh.

I doubt i will "click" with anyone there (from past experience) but tbh i'm thinking mp3 player=music and recorded comedy shows/audiobooks should keep me slightly amused.

and anyone who has done shelvestacking will know it can be oddly satsifying to finish a shelf and make it look pretty lol
Isn't a 10 hour shift awfully long?

I would probably take that kind of job though-seems easy enough...like my job but without the evil customers and the tills, but surely the time won't pass by very quick?

You do become a nightowl very quickly. Be prepared to lose your daytimes for a month...

I did 2 night shifts as a tesco supervisor, the first time I fell asleep in the Cash Office - Pro-plus were quite good though when I eventually had to so something! The second time I found it fine after sleeping 4 hours beforehand! =D
I done two 12 hour nightshifts at WHSmith's in early July.

I didnt feel tired during the two nights, but when we started the second nightshift, I was dead. I'd do it again because I made a lot of money - I have had to work six 6 hour shifts to make what I did during those shifts.

Definitely take the job, nightshift is the way forward. The only thing I would say is that the whole 4 shifts a week thing might not work to your advantage. During your rest days you'll (probably) have to keep the same kind of sleep pattern as you do when you're working, so you'll have to fill your nights with something to do while everyones asleep!
9pm to 7am for stock replenishment? That sounds absolutely awful. I used to be wrecked after about 5 hours starting at 4am.
Matt, just out of interest, did you take the job? I phoned up my local Sainsbury's on saturday regarding vacancies and like you, they only had night shift work. So they got me to go in and fill in an application. Doubt I'll get it anyway, from what I've read they seem to be very selective and I'm not exactly the most extraverted and customer-orientated person in the world. Well, we'll see.

If you can handle the hours then it should be ok. I work at Tescos (which are a crap company to work for FYI) and i see the night team come in at 9pm. Most of them are insane, talk to themselves or talk to customers randomly about anything. Must be the long hours and loneliness.

The funniest bit is when they spend all night making the shelves look amazing, all lined up and neat etc, then when it opens in the morning, within like 2 hours it looks all crap again :p:

Yeah I've taken it. Doing 39 hours a week for 6 weeks, 3 nights of 9pm-7am and one 10pm-7am. £6.50 an hour.

If you're not particulary customer orientated you might take to it, if you can stomach the hours. I'm only doing it untill I return to uni so I will endure it.

Thing is I worked for sainsburys for 2 years at college so Have up to date health/safety/fire training still. Basically they can let me get on with it which is ideal for them. So I just phone up when I'm about back Home.
