10,000 steps a day

Has anyone tried loosing weight doing this, while eating healthy.

I was watching "should i worry about.. exericise" last week and they say that the reason alot of us dont exercise is we have genes that stop us. I know when it comes to exericise i just cant be bothered, which is what the show kept implying also.

I even tried doing dance stage stuff since im a bit self concious about exercising in public. I sweat loads and get out of breathe, but i dont think it helped i didnt seem to loose any or tone any muscle.

Anyway i got a free step counter a few months ago, and never bothered using it, so im trying it out today. I think i dont do enough i recon i do about 4 or 5k steps a day just around the house. I probabily do 6 or 7k when i go shopping.

If i do actually do the 10k steps, which i doubt then i still dont get why i aint loosing the weight. I weigh 73kg and i feel my legs are huge the rest of me im quite happy with. I heard stepping on the stairs at home helps, but it just seems to tone the calfs and not my thighs.

i used to do a lot of walking around, i was on my feet all the time - the way to do it? if you have a car get rid of it and start using public transport, you'll soon get frustrated but you'll end up walking a lot more probably .

Getting public transport isnt an option, i have a 30 mins drive to go to uni. I would spend more money on public transport than on my car and turn my journey into an hour journey. I do walk when its possible, i was just wondering if the 10k steps a day theory actually works.

hmmm... I think it might work. I wish I had some scales then I could tell you (I think I might have put on weight, but I'm not sure). I used to do that easily, I'm sure, but now I just laze around all day and only go running when I feel like it, or shopping twice a week round the corner and maybe twice a month into town (Belluno or Venice). I certainly don't do 10000 a day anymore (I left school in febuary/march). Walking is good for your health in general, it gets your whole system going and working properly - I think.

I thought it was 10k steps to maintain your current weight.

You could try it though, it's hardly gonna kill you.

Take it as a compliment, pengiuns are the cutest mammals.

About the exercise: I go to the gym, but not regurlaly and its not making any difference apart from I feel good each time I go
I think you should do 10,000 steps a day as you say.

Well since i broke up from uni, ive gone from 12 stone to just over 11 1/2. Ive been doing more walking and ive been trying to eat less. But BBQ's are harsh cos i love chicken kebabs and garlic bread. So i think ive lost weight and probabily not done the 10k. Im gonna try and be healther when i go back to uni, taking the stairs more and going for low fat options at lunch and not having so many things to go with them.

I think the 10k of steps thing is going to need to be a lifestyle instead of doing it a few times and hoping for instant results.

I dont think that would be possible either, most of the journey is a country road(national speed limits) lots of farm land either side of the road not very safe for a young female to be walking around alone. Closer to the univerity it is expensive for parking, and the uni has free parking.

It'll only "work" if you eat sensibly as well. Chances are you have too much fat which is why you can't see any "tone" in your legs. You could walk a million steps a day but if you eat too much you won't lose weight/shape up etc.

Loosing weight is easy if you start fasting on certain days.

But gaining weight ... now thats a mission :frown:

yeah, you are correct there... do you know if there are any hiking societies or such like at your uni? Might help to join some thing like that... just an idea. Otherwise, yeah, try not to use the lifts, stairs are very healthy  and pack your own lunches and try something without bread. Dunno, like a banana and a yogurt or the like instead of a sandwich.

I read somewhere that 10k maintains weight and keeps you pretty healthy, but to get losing weight you gotta double it - 20000! Although I find that an average day - i.e. wander round the shops then 4 hour shift at work (on my feet) clocks up around 14k and I barely notice. Not that I'm losing any bloomin weight!!!!

I cant really say how much i didnt today step wize, i kept forgetting about it and i think i reset it a few times. I managed 1k between the last reset and taking it off for bed, but im not sure how many times i reset it, had to be once at least.

I wasnt very active today and not eaten 1/4 of what i normally do either. Im a bit hungry now, but its 4 hours since i ate and at the time i didnt feel hungry. I didnt have breakie cos i woke up too late, and i had left overs from last night for lunch, some BBQed chicken kebab and cous cous, but vast majority of cous cous went into the bin cos it was nasty.

I guess when you cut down your portions it takes a while for your belly to get used to it. I always ate til i was full, but i think im gonna try eating til i think ive had enough even if i aint full.

Yeh brilliant, your new regime will guarantee success, the pounds will be falling off you.

Get real.

Genes that stop us from exercising? Complete, and utter, rubbish.

I have noticed some extra toning since i started walking for 2 hours straight per day for the last 2 1/2 months, i dont expect the weight to drop off but feeling healther by having more endurance(not getting out of breathe so much) cant be a bad thing.

I only mentioned it cos the show said so, maybe it is bull and maybe it isnt. Not necessarly genes that stop us from exericising but according to the show it was to do with the fight or flight method, we wont do any phsycial activity unless we were in danger. Thus saving our energy and chemical levels for when we really need them.

In this day and age we dont need that kind of reaction, but if it is programmed into our genes like they say it is, then its not gonna change now, maybe it will become redunant like other things such as tonsils and appendics in the future.
