Well, the statistics say that it is: 25% chance. But it's more complicated than that, I'm afraid

Wow.. It sounds easy to get into Oxbridge compared with US private and public "ivies" with those rates.

Hey so what are the chances, to get into an ivy league uni in the US?

I'd say about 12% is average, sometimes 9% for certain schools. It depends on which ivy league uni.

But I'll have you know, Harvard's rate is very low, and it rejects 4.0 valedictorians with PERFECT SATs and amazing extracurriculars all the time. Which means what they do accept is remarkable.

Since America regards Harvard as its best uni, and you guys regard Oxford as the best, we'll compare the two.

Harvard's admit rate is about 10%... and Oxbridge is 25%?

Yes. The standard of a university is decided entirely on admit rates. Get real.

Oh, and Harvard also accepts people with non-perfect SATs.

Those accepted to Harvard without perfect SATs= Those who also started non-profit organizations and made 30,000 dollars for the tsunami relief. Or those who won national competitions for science. Those who scored 140 or above on the AMC.

It's not ignorance..it's statistics.

Anyway, your own THES ranks Harvard first internationally, above Oxford and Cambridge. I don't even think they were in the top 5.

You're quite ignorant. Why don't you, as part of a lovely liberal arts programme, do some elementary stats

Um I'm actually an economics/ history double. And I just took statistics, but thanks.

And it's true. This is from THES--which is, might I add, British:

Ok, my bad, Oxford made #5 and Cambridge #6.

Rank Institution Country Score (out of 1000)
1 Harvard University USA 1000.0
2 University of California, Berkeley USA 880.2
3 Massachusetts Institute of Technology USA 788.9
4 California Institute of Technology USA 738.9
5 University of Oxford UK 731.8
6 University of Cambridge UK 725.4
7 Stanford University USA 688.0
8 Yale University USA 582.8
9 Princeton University USA 557.5
10 ETH Zurich Switzerland 553.7
I was not contradicting that part. Nice try.

Though: Berkeley 2nd? Pah.

Hmm maybe, but I wouldn't put Oxford or Cambridge as second.

and what university do YOU attend? Please, enlighten us all before you criticize.

But honestly, unless you are a math/statistics major, why should you ridicule an economics' major's mathematics knowledge?

Sounds rather hypocritical to me.

when was that published in the times higher ed supplement? i find it very difficult to believe that havard has a perfect score, and that there is such a huge discrepancy between no1 and no.2 in terms of the score.

November 2004.. Check their website.

But it's true. Harvard is king of universities...

lol Once more you are being irrelevant! Whether you possess a maths doctorate or not, you can still be wrong. My point is that you seem to have a poor grasp of statistics and affecting factors.

Do I have to have a BA in English to tell you that you have made a spelling error? Think about it.

I think that you're taking things too personally. The universities bit. I think you're stupid, consider that to be personal.

When you've got a league table based largely on research, are you asking how hard it is to get in, or how good it is when you've got there?

Hmm, methinks someone hasn't read the question, or perhaps is deliberately ignoring it.

sweetie, if you're going to throw insults like that around, at least do it via pm or something. ever heard the cliche about dirty laundry in public? you're not doing much for the american image, throwing personal insults around like that. if you have a problem with a discussion, keep the argument to the discussion. i know she has provoked you. don't rise to it, it just makes you look worse.

i find this rather amusing actually, the fact that you're calling someone names that would be more at home in a school playground. and to add to that, you don't even know her, you just happen to disagree with her views on one little issue.

i love tsr
This is so funny. Keep it coming.
