Postgraduate accomodation: St Peter's Court or Albion House

Hi all,

I am late in registering for registering for the university arranged accommodation. However, there are still places at St Peter's Court (Radford) and Albion House (Beeston).
I like St Peter's Court in terms of its ensuite room and that it's nearer to Jubilee Campus (coz' my course there). However, I've heard many people saying about Radford, which is dangerous in Nottingham with a number of crimes, burglary, mugging... Whereas, Beeston seems to be a safer area...However, it's far from Jubilee. Does any body know how long does it take from Albion House to Jubilee ?

I have to response to the Accommodation Office as soon as possible to secure a place because the number of rooms available are limited now. I am an international student and have never been to Nottingham. Could you guys help me providing some useful information?

A bunch of thanks.

All i can tell you is that i've never heard of ALbion House, which probably means it's not actually part of the university (like ST Peter's Court is) and is accommodation that the Uni is trying to arrange for you.

Although, i may be completely wrong here. I'm sure a current student will be able to help you out much more here. xx

Albion House is grad only I think, where as St Peters court is for undergrads as well. So if you're likely to get annoyed by noisy, drunk teenagers (I don't know about St Peter's Court, but that was the case in my (catered) hall about 6 nights out of 7), then it may not be for you. And yes, Beeston is a nicer area I think. Plus it has supermarkets and shops and things like that.

Also, I think Albion House is very close to university park, and once you're on campus there's a free hopper bus that'll take you to jubilee, so it shouldn't take you too long to get there

There's a good map at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nh/students/accomm/postgraduate/map.htm

Uni park is the big orange blob (labelled 8) and Jubilee is the pink 4.

Albion house is behind Sainsburys in Beeston. It's about a 15 minute walk to the West Entrance of campus, where you can get a hopper bus (free) to Jubilee. If you wanted to walk, it would take you around 15 minutes to campus, 15-20 minutes to cross campus then another 15 minutes to Jubilee - so around 45 minutes to an hour in total. Albion house has much fewer rooms than St Peter's Court and so will be quieter, but you won't be included in university life as much as if you were in St Peter's Court.

I don't know if it's much of an issue for you, but rooms at Albion house are cheaper than St Peter's Court per week, but you can get shorter lets for St Peter's Court (Albion house is around 51 weeks a year and so more money in the long term if you're only there for 30)

St Peter's Court is much closer to Jubilee and has ensuite rooms (Albion house doesn't). Radford is closer to Lenton where most students live in their second and third years. Although crime is higher than in other areas of Nottingham, I wouldn't say it's particularly high in Radford.

If I was in your situation, personally, I would choose St Peter's Court. It's much closer and has more of a university atmosphere.

Thank you all for your advices.

Some of my friends living in Nottingham told me that Radford is more dangerous than other areas.

I disagree with Adam White who said Lenton was a 'no go' area...! I definitely wouldn't put it in the same group as St Ann's and the Meadows. Most second and third years live in Lenton. Although St Peter's Court is in Radford, because it is a large university owned complex they do have extra security making it safer than ordinary houses in the same area.

Relating to Laura Cooper's comment, I haven't experienced any form of violence or burglary first hand but have heard stories of people who have. I know some of these were due to silly mistakes, such as walking home at night alone or leaving windows open whilst out of the house, and could have been prevented.

If you think you would feel unsafe living in St Peter's Court then Albion House would probably be a better option for you. If you wanted to look for private accommodation then you could live further away from the city centre and in safer, cheaper areas of Nottingham.

Yeah, Lenton certainly isn't a no-go area- it's something like 50% students!

Beeston is safer though- and if you're a post grad, then you may prefer the peace and quiet. And being behind Sainsburys can never be a bad thing!
