It's a great uni - don't know why there isn't a room for it

Not there quite yet myself but have 2 siblings who have gone through. Can't tell you much about that specific course but I know lots about Belfast!

Queen's is 6th in the UK out of 98 universities for business and management. It's a fantastic uni and a great place to be. I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, just not right now as it's too warm to be inside!

As you may note from the poster's location he/she is in Chester, England and so will be leaving to come to QUB, N.Ireland.

Be more diligent with your posts in future.

Hey,...

This is my first post, and i was just looking through the forum and i could not find a room for Queens, Belfast.

I'm interested in doing business management at Queens, but i'm not sure about going to Blefast as I live in north wales.

Is anybody going or their at the moment which could give me some advice?

Chris

OK, well as already stated, Queens has a reputable business management course, one of the best in the UK.
At my school, around 60-70% of students go on to Queens, it is a very popular choice, so you will find that a lot of the entry requirements may have been demanding (I know of a 9A's GCSE and AAA a-level student being rejected from medicine), but it is worth it. The campus is very nice in attractive grounds, the people are generally friendly. The only thing I don't like is the actual location of the campus, there isn't much in the immediate area, but it's still good enough.

My personal experience of queen's first hand was that it was crap maybe that is because i live in northern ireland and have experience of what kind of place it is. Very impersonal, very poor location and alot of running about. I was just stating my experience of 9 months of hell if you don't like it then get over it.

I don't like the look of it at all. And I agree with what ppl have been saying about ppl with excelent records being rejected. Because of the ammount of ppl from NI applying that don't want to go away they can pick and choose who they admit.

It also has a very 'high-and-mighty' attitude, I think its one of the only places outside of Oxbridge still to ask for AAA for Medicine (despite being 15ish/24 in league tables, not the most important thing but still) and they are very rigid with grade requirements, you HAVE to get what they specify, none of this equivalent points business.

Still I think it should be in a sub-forum with UU.

Why isn't there a sub forum for Irish Unis? Do ppl in England not apply through CAO as well? Does any one apply through CAO, I was going to but missed the deadline.

Attending university in Northern Ireland would be a mistake. People who grow up here can obviously tolerate it, but it would be like someone from Belfast moving to Jersey. The population is largely homogeneous, the universities are mediocre (with only a handful of excellent departments between the two of them), only a few people in Britain actually know anything about them, the city is unusually cold and then you have all of the sectarian horseshit to worry about.

Queen's is excellent for a few subjects, including the one you're interested in, but most of the university is average. Go elsewhere.

Queen's is a very good university and has many departments that are highly rated. However as the above poster mentions, it's not exactly a great place for an 'outsider' to come into.

Although The Troubles are now ending, in recent weeks there's been a shocking and sickening amount of sectarian violence in County Antrim (including Belfast). Belfast is a bleak city (it's really a large town in my eyes) and if you are Irish (or Northern Irish) there are areas where it is just not wise to enter.

The PSNI (the police force for Northern Ireland) are the most corrupt and inept police force in western Europe.

It's suprising high in the Times GUG for the scinces and engineering.(top for Pharmacy) That's about it I think. But I totally agree that people go to it more for geographical reasons than because they really want to go.

Hey i live in Rep. of Ireland bout an hour from Queens. iv been to their open day as my friend wanted to go there+she wanted someone to go up with her. the uni is lovely it really is - the main building is really old and theres a huge park in the middle where students generally laze about (what else would ya b doin right?), the libraries are pretty slick, there are other buildings like psychology spread out from the main building, there are student shops, guild, etc straight across from the main building - i could go on and on and on - but i wont! :p:
the only thing bout Belfast though is it has a bad rep for friction but Queens seems to be in a safe enough area and everybody that we met were friendly and helpful.
Good luck with whatever you decide

Not sure if ur still checking this or whatever but thought I'd reply anyway.

Queens university belfast was possibly the biggest mistake I ever made; certainly as pointed out above for certain subjects it is excellently ranked and excellently regarded, but it has a few inherant problems.

Firstly, for freshers, queens freshers day is nothing when compared to other courses, I know loads of people who go to queens and think this. The only actually centrally organised and advertised freshers event is the freshers ball which as a third year I could get tickets for should I so desire, so there's no guarentee you'll get in.

Secondly, while the teaching in my degree (which is the only degree I'm in a position to comment on) is on the whole very good, but the communication basically is non-existant and often you find things out by stumbling into them rather then being told or informed, which is very frustrating.

Thirdly, Belfast isn't a great student city, as has already been mentioned, infact it's a pretty terrible student city, there are a few good places to go but they're few and far between and drinks promotions are rare, although god help me tuesday night at the limelight is almost a reason to come here on it's own. But again as has been mentioned there can be an air of tension here that is difficult to describe and there are alot of places you just wouldn't go.

It also has a very 'high-and-mighty' attitude, I think its one of the only places outside of Oxbridge still to ask for AAA for Medicine (despite being 15ish/24 in league tables

And a largish portion of student attitudes reflect this.

Queens has had it too cushy too long, it has a huge catchment of ulster students no matter what it does so it so it will always be a good university, but if it was in england competing with some of the big universitys over there it would be getting hammered for it's trouble. UUJ suffers from the problem of location and as such queens will beat it in that way. All in all queens has some good points but for my mind are majorly outnumbered by the down sides. My advice is go somewhere else unless you have your heart set on the engineering degree from queens (which is still quite a prestigious degree).
