I'm thinking of buying an inter-rail pass for going on a trip, but what does an inter-rail pass actually allow you to do? How does it work?

The website http://www.raileurope.co.uk/inter-rail/ doesn't seem to give to much detail.

I assume it DOESN'T let you simply get on any train you want...

Thanks in advance

I think you have to pay for reserved seating and other options, some you have to book beforehand i think. El pollo is interrailing at the moment so i'll direct him here when he comes back. Also blissy has been interailing so should know

Very occasionally you are asked to pay a supplement. However the idea of the ticket is that you can use the trains for free. Italy make you pay extra although we managed to wangle our way out of it by being charming  (at least what's that I like to think, she might just have taken pity on us because we looked so scruffy ) Other than that I think I paid 4 Euros to get an overnight train from Paris to Berlin. It's fantastic!

Yes. Use it.
Then I and my friends will be able to drive you.
I am the best driver ever to drive for Thames trains.
My handiwork has been exposed for all to see.

Please come - there are many drivers like me. Just remember I was trained and passed my assesments.

Trust me to drive you.

Nobody wants to be driven by me?
I'm upset.

My mate Larry will drive you instead.

You'd rather have Larry?
He was worse - had no excuse.
