The scientist leading the Beagle project says he has not given up hope of contacting the missing Mars lander.

The UK-built probe failed to transmit a signal on reaching the planet early on Christmas Day.

A later sweep of Mars by the Jodrell Bank radio telescope also failed to detect any sign of the probe, and there are fears it could have crashed.

You can just imagine the conspiracy theorists reaction to this... Martians are no doubt thwarting human attempts to discover them.

Mars Express won't be in position to start communicating with Beagle 2 until January. It has posh cameras that can look for bits scattered across the landscape, well the parachutes and bags anyway.

The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one, they said.

The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one, but still, they come.

Anyone else like War of the Worlds?

well at least they would no for sure if it had crashed or landed if they used mars express

    yeah.

If anything can communicate with Beagle, it's Mars Express, they've told it to get into position and it'll be a while. All is going well with Mars Express, the scientists cheered and hugged when they saw it coming round the other side of Mars earlier.

I don't see the significance of Oddyssey myself, just looks like the Americans trying to tag along on somebody else's mission, as if they can't stand being out the space spotlight.

Course Odyssey could never communicate with Beagle - its an American piece of rubbish!

Oh and did you know that the signal Beagle is supposed to give off is a 9 note tune that was composed specially by Blur?

    Yeah it is.

It's on the Beagle 2 website.

Kinda freaky, actually, with all the sci-fi sounding tones and stuff. I don't get the intentional crackling, wouldn't they want as perfect notes as possible to test that it's getting a clear signal.

Actually they could compare the crackling they get from Beagle 2 to that on their own CD, make sure it sends data correctly (like what you hear on the phone when you pick it up when you're online, those of you on dialup).

    K here are the theories:

    1. Something went wrong and it crashed and was destroyed / damaged on landing.
    2. It landed in a huge valley or something like that, that is blocking the signal.
    3. It didn't unfold properly when it landed.
    4. The antenna did not extend properly and could be facing the wrong direction.
    5. Beagle is actually ok but there is a problem communicating with Oddesey (in which case hopefully Mars Express will have more luck).
    6. There was a problem with the on board computer clock and beagle either failed to 'wake up' or it is waking up at the wrong times and so we are missing the communications.
    7. It could have been blown off course and landed in completely the wrong place (unlikely since the radio telescope sweep last night saw no trace of it)

Aparently, if it has survived, it can last for a few weeks before it dies so there is some hope. Some additonal radio telescopes in America are meant to be joining in the search for beagle.

I personally think that something went wrong on landing and it has been destoyed. After all that method of landing has only been tried once before and so is far from a proven science. Hopefully when Mars Express gets on the scene it may spread some light as to what happened.

i think the americans are blocking any signal because they're jealous the British could launch such a programme without blowing a massive budget.
