In 1956 Hungary was a 'satelite state' meaning it was under the control of the USSR (Russia). The revolt in 1956 was very significant because it showed Hungary were unhappy with Russian communist control and Russia needed to be in control of HUngary as pert of its plan not to create another world war. Stalin's idea was to build a 'buffer zone' which required countries in Eastern Europe such as Hungary to protect Russia.

Also following the Hungarian Revolt, other countries copied e.g. Czechoslovakia-if they were successful, it would inevitably make Russia weaker.

hope this helps
