BATH!!! Bath, Bath Bath..
I think it's beautiful (well, the older areas) ; and they have an area called the Crescent which just looks as if you've stepped back in time.

where would you recommend....for a nice picnic...bautiful scenery.... nice rural villages nearby
i'm thinking cotswolds.... warwick castle, blenheim palace?
or new forest?
which is best?
if you like hill walking and quiet little hamlets, the peak district in derbyshire is nice, a few places i recommend...

Biggin-by-Hartington
Dovedale
Matlock and Bakewell (a bit more commercialised)
Mappleton
Tissington

all these places have hotels/inn's/B+Bs

Anyone been to Budleigh Salterton, near Exmouth in Devon?

I've just spent a week there - beautiful place, lovely pebble peach, delicious ice cream shop, good fish & chips etc... simply amazing!

I'm more a fan of Great Pulteney Street myself. My all time favourite view in Bath is leaning over from Grand Parade at night time to take in the full spectacular view of Pulteney Weir - it's breathtaking!

I do agree it's an amazingly beautiful place, although I tend to take it for granted cuz I live here.

i live in tewkesbury in gloucestershire and can recommend the cotswolds area. its beautiful, scenic, and picturesque.

http://www.cotswolds.info/
I used to go to Tewkesbury all the time. Isn't it like 20 mins from Malvern? You don't have the beautiful common and the nice big hills in Cotswold though...

and yes 425m is very high for southern England.

Well...well....um...
I (used to) live in Malvern

Come on, admit that the Cotswolds have nothing like the Malvern Hills.

Maybe if Spoon's lucky he'll get to do both :P

think we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one
to be honest i havent been there many times, just the odd family day out hiking up the hills and i think i went to some swimming pool with wave machine once....? the water is nice at malvern.
but the cotswolds are FAR prettier.

You probably went to the Malvern Splash. Not sure if it's still called that. I used to go to kiddie disco nights there . The weird thing is that I used to go to Tewkesbury all the time to go to the pool there too.

I won't agree that the Cotswolds are prettier. It's definitely more touristic. The only people who visit Malvern are old people who go for a walk on the hills and the town is so quiet that it's not really the kind of place a bunch of Japanese tourists would want to visit. It's just too English and since not that many foreigners have heard of Elgar, Morgan Cars or Malvern Water, the cultural aspect isn't too appealing to them.

But since Spoon was asking for a nice place to go for a picnic, I think it's perfect. I've had many great walks+picnics on the Hills.
