Starting salary for Pharmacy?

Does anyone know what the rough starting salary for Pharmacy is (on average)?

I don't mean Pharmacy and Pharmacology together, but just Pharmacy on its own. (I have seen the Times starting salary pdf but it puts pharmacy and pharmacology together)

I was told this at a university open day

The starting salary (after pre-reg year) is around £20,000 a year for community pharmacy

The starting salary for hospital pharmacists is slightly less at about £18,000

The starting salary for a pharmacist in industry is around £20,000

And the salary paid during the pre- registration year is about £12,000- £15,000 a year

I want to do pharmacy at ulsop too (first choice, 2nd choice King's) - but that doesn't really sound great for after 4 years of study........:s-smilie:
Starting wage for a community pharmacist depends on where you work. Boots is currently offering 33k a year starting salary if you sign a 3 year contract.

Hospital pre-reg is going up to 19k soon so I'd assume the starting wage it gonna go up from 18k cause it'd be a bit of a bummer to get paid less once you were qualified

 Unlucky mate

I'm told that Boots pay pre-reg about £16k which IMHO is pisspoor. I'm getting somewhere between £19K and £21K for doing hospital pre-reg in a Greater London hospital next year - final figures aren't finalised yet as the NHS pay scales are being changed this year.

If you're after ready cash, do community locum work - £25/hour (possibly more nowadays) is not uncommon.

Just wondering does anyone know how long does a pharmacist has to work to be considered as experienced? Also usually how long does it take for one to become a Grade H pharmacist. Said if one work very hard and devote fully? Thank you  (I realize it is quite difficult to give a definite answer)

sack boots then, lol not really its not all about the money although it plays a role in my decsion of where to work.
I worked for Boots over the summer for an 8 week placement thingee. Personally, I didn't like it. Found I didn't learn a lot to say I was there for so long. They offered me a pre-reg place at the same store on pay of £16k for the year which I have turned down. Bear in mind that they get paid £16k to take on a pre-reg and you'll soon figure out that you are in fact a free employee to them - and the fact they don't compete with hospital in the pay stakes (http://www.pharmalife.co.uk/jobs/documents.php?doc=overview#Salary) means that you feel pretty undervalued.

Once qualified you do earn a fair bit more initially there (~£31k/yr for a 40hr/week contract), but I still don't think you get treated particularly well.

I've worked at Lloyds too. I much preferred them and the pay there is comparable to Boots.

Personally though, I've opted for hospital and have accepted a pre-reg place there for next year :-D
How much work experience did you have in hospital? I realllllllly want to do my pre-reg in hospital but I'm getting kinda worried it's gonna start getting more competitive beens as the pay is up now. Plus I really wanna stay in Cardiff or go to Birmingham - apparently both are very competitive. Argh!

At least I know I won't end up in boots beens as I'm not applying to do a 3rd placement with them.

student from Canada looking at which pharm school is good in UK. Maybe you guys could help me out. I'm looking at Nottingham, London, and Bath.. Which of these are more competitive? OH as well, what are the Grade A to H?
I had some experience in hopital, but not vast amounts - i do 18hrs per term in Salford hospital with uni for tutorials and patient medication reviews and stuff like that and i did some work experience in Burnley General. The place i've got is in bolton, which isn't my first choice, but i'm really glad to have got it.

Pretty much everyone i know who did the "Gateway to pre-reg" placement with Boots has turned them down. Their pre-reg policy may well leave them with egg on their face.

I think i've read you saying somewhere that you've done a fair bit of hospital experience, so you should be fine getting hospital wherever you want. The clearing places are up at the minute and theres loooooooooooooads of places still left around london too
That's made me feel a lot better - thank you

Yeah I've did a four week placement during the summer and I'm applying to do one, maybe two (one Cardiff, one Brum) for this summer coming for fingers crossed

I'm a second year student at Bradford. Starting salary in community pharmacy is £30k+. Boots offered my cousin £33k starting. If you locum, you're in a different ball park. You can get upto £25/hour so you'd be getting £50k plus just after completing your degree. As a locum you would have to source your own insurance and pension schemes. We earn more than medics for the first few years.

Dentist's really rake it in so I'm considering doing that post grad whilst locuming on weekends,.

I dunno about those figures man, they sound extremely low. I believe in Scotland anyway the starting salary of a qualified pharmacist in a hospital is between 26k and 28k a year. Community pharmacists earn slightly more. Lets just say the figures you quoted are correct...if this was the case a fully qualified pharmacist would be earning over 10k less than a dentist on their Pre Reg year(s) and almost 2k less a year than a teacher on their vocational year...

But then again I cant tell you with absolute confidence the average salaries pharmacists starting out earn.

Those figures are definately too low, but they were posted over 2 years ago.
