Woah! All unis are free! Yayz.. lucky you. When I go to the UK, I have to pay about 25,000 pounds a year for tuition + accomodation. And in Malaysian ringgit (my nationality) though not where I'm living now... it's 1 pound to 6.6 ringgit. Lolz........

SO you can imagine.

I'm considered international too, and it is expensive, but not that expensive, about £13,000 a year including tuition, accomodation and living expenses.

The total annual cost of studying at Cambridge as an undergraduate is currently about £16,800 - £19,200 (depending on subject, and excluding travel and summer vacation living costs). Obviously the cost in future years is likely to increase at least in line with the rate of inflation, and the effect on the cost of any changes in currency exchange rates cannot easily be predicted.

which college are you waiting to hear from?

Downing

Heya  Have you got their results as well? And what is BGS? Lolz.. I'm slow.

BGS is the Board of Graduate Studies. The admissions office there is extremely painful to deal with, although most of the staff there I've spoken to have been very nice at a personal level.

Yeah... I've got the result. I've just received an offer from St. John's to read for a CPGS (-> PhD, hopefully) in semiconductor physics. I only received the offer letter 20 days after it was dated, which gives you an indication of how slow Cambridge are at international mail.

Downing

I hear that competition for law at Downing is quite high... is this so?

I know this is the last think you probably want to think about right now, but you must have done a fair bit of investigating before you settled on Downing. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on whether I should recommend it to my friend, who is applying to read for a PhD in the sciences and has asked me for college recommendations.

Woah! Holy moly! Yeppers I told them that in my fax. Esp since Brunei is an unknown country with few international flights. Mail here gets sent all over the place and it's really difficult to receive. Gosh, so far I haven't heard any replies despite my fax. It's been 2 hours already. I wonder if I will hear from them today though. Hrmphy.. will wait for 3 more hours then give up hope and wait until Monday. I really want to know.
I got rejected from St. John's Cambridge, for history. Waiting for Durham to reply now.

Yeppers. The competition is extremely high, especially for law. It's vicious and one of those marked in 'red' for applicants per place ratios. However, I really wanted to go rather than being slotted into a college I did not like so I gave it a shot.

My mentor applied to do his Law PHD at Downing, and after his interview he was immediately informed that he was accepted. So it may be a really good idea. The website for Downing is no good, but the college was beautiful beyond belief... and the people are angels too. Heehe.. I'm biased maybe.

It's mostly theory and history. It's the most academic music course in the country and excludes practical musicianship in all but one module, I think in Year 3. You have to be able to do loads of harmony and counterpoint and harmonise at the keyboard in the interview AND analyse an unseen score.

At my interview I got a score by Ravel to talk about - and we talked about Schoenberg for quite a while too.

i got a score by ravel 2 and had 2 talk about schoenburg!

I asked about that at interview because lessons at other unis mostly come as part of the package. I will be stuffed if I don't get financial help for lessons. My interviewer told me 'As long as it's legal, we'll pay for it!' Mind you, he was from Trinity so they can afford to throw their money around. I don't know how I'd get on at another college. I've applied for an instrumental award and was going to apply for a Choral Award too (Sidney is one of those that does it when you're there and not in Sept. )

r u sure!

when i had choral award auditions im sure this year that it was their first time in the auditions, im sure cos i think i spoke 2 the organ scholars!

If I dont get into Cam I shall probably take the Royal Holloway option (and doss for the rest of the year on a 3 Bs offer!!) but I really liked the Cam course because I am the sad git who actually likes doing harmony and counterpoint!!

really so u think royal holloway is good?

ive got an offer from there same as u 3 bs or abc, but i didnt think it was that marvellous , but then i dont no anything about it!

Yes, it was their first year auditioning for choral scholars, but you can audition for the choir when you're actually there too: I think they're only taking about 4 choral scholars starting in 2004, it's still mostly voluntary.
When my fax rings.. I'm going to have a heart attack. Been camping at the fax machine for 2 and a half hours now. Anyone know if Cambridge admissions offices are open today? If you could tell me, I'd be eternally greatful coz' then I own't have to wait by the phone all day. Thanks and cheers.

Nonono, I'm not doing music! I'm a NatSci, I just happen to be in the choir so I know the organ scholars and the music people quite well:smile: Did your letter say they were still considering you? There's always hope! I don't know how the pooling system works very well but I'd guess they're trying to see if they can arrange an extra place to take you on...

Ignore that post, I've just read back and seen that you haven't got a reply... Well in that case there's more hope! I'm pretty certain that they send all the letters, at least all those for one particular subject/college group - rejections and offers - out together so a long wait really doesn't have a bearing on whether you're in or not..
