Hi, I have an offer from York to study Physics this year (2010) and I have been thinking about accomodation... I don't really want to live on campus, and I have had a look at Fairfax House. It seems perfect, but do any current students have photos of bedrooms, bathroom and kitchens? And what are the breakfasts like? I was also looking at the application process and apparently you can't apply directly for Fairfax House, just for Vanbrugh College, is there any way of guaranteeing that I get Fairfax House? Thanks for reading, any advice would be appreciated! xxxxx

Fairfax is great. The breakfasts are good (if you can be bothered to get up for them, which I usually can't :p: ), and the bedrooms are all fairly decent size. The bathrooms are quite big too, and there's plenty of them - I've never had any trouble getting a shower, there's always one free. The kitchens are the main downside, admittedly. They're very small and get dirty very quickly, but I think the pro's of Fairfax (the scenery, the socialising [not that I do much of that either :p: ], etc) far outweigh the cons.

Don't have any photos, unfortunately, but there's a few people who live at Fairfax and read the York threads fairly regularly, so they might be able to help.

I don't think I have any photos of the bedrooms or kitchens. The thing is, they're quite variable when it comes to size and shape, it not being designed for students, so it'd be difficult to show you a typical room anyway.

Breakfasts are grand - cereal, fruit, tea, coffee, toast, yoghurts - the basics really. It's really sociable though, assuming you make it down to them. I always do, but some don't.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. If you're coming to visit at any point then I might even be able to let you in and show you around - assuming I'm free. You need a keycard to get in, you see.

First off, you can apply directly for Fairfax- it's on a separate payment plan to the rest of the college, since our rent factors in the cost of breakfasts (8:30->9:30, every weekday. Bread, cereal, milk, fruits, jam, marmite, and a dinky little automated toaster that you'll learn to love. Assuming you ever get up for the things- which, being a physics student, is pretty likely).

What's more, if you particularly want Fairfax, the chances are that you'll get it- it's not frightfully popular, given its off campusness- the six minute walk's too much for some people. :p:

I'll try and get some photos of typical rooms and the like- there's a distinct dearth of any information on Fairfax on York's Accomodation Office site, as I recall- really annoyed me when I was applying. Rest assured that it's all pretty nice.

Grand place to live, all in all- nicest bathrooms in the University, from what I've seen (Actual baths! Although whether you'd want to risk a bath in them is another matter), and the kitchens vary from passable to utterly irredeemable.
...But you can always use another kitchen if your own's transformed into something out of a horror flick. All bar one are relatively average by York Accommodation standards. If kitchens really do matter to you, then some of the newer blocks might be worth a look (New Vanbrugh, Derwent/Langwith Extension Blocks, and Alcuin College. Although I hasten to say that I'm in no way endorsing applying to Alcuin. *shudders*).

Check back later/tomorrow- I'll have sorted some photos then.

Edit: You're from Buxton? Lovely town, that.

In hindsight, it seriously makes me LOL that one of the reasons I was half-considering applying to Fairfax was for the breakfasts... I can't remember the last time I actually ate breakfast. If any English students in Fairfax get up regularly for the breakfast then I admire them, but my lie ins are dear to me.

What is the issue with Fairfax kitchens, out of curiosity? They seem to be a bit notorious on TSR... is it their size, or facilities, or both?

LOL! I've only just got out of bed and it's 2.30 already!! Breakfast would probably make me get up earlier though - even if I just crawl back into bed afterwards :yum:

And yes Buxton, is (fairly) lovely...although it rains. A lot. :|

bedrooms
Mine's somewhat unrepresentative of the norm, since a) My room's exceptionally large, b) It's a complete and utter tip, and c) It looks out over York, rather than Fairfax's (lovely) courtyard, and d) It has two windows, rather than one.

But, here you go, anyways:

Lovely view, as well- absolutely stunning at sunset.

The rest are fairly similar. Toilets are usually in smaller rooms just next door- pretty much just broom cupboards with a loo in. They're dotted all over the place- you're never terribly far from one.

Most of them are pretty decent, actually. Certainly no Alcuin/Vanbrugh Palace, but they're more than usable.

Which is more than I can say for the smallest kitchen, which is used only sparingly nowadays for actual cooking by the folks around it, as a result of this:

(Horror beyond your deepest imagination awaits within- not for the faint of heart.)

Take note that this is the day before it's usually cleaned. It's not usually quite this bad.

I was going to get a photo of a normal Fairfax kitchen, but my phone appears to have died somewhat- the camera button seems to not want to take any more pictures. Alas.=[

Rest assured that the rest of the kitchens are fine.

This week it has been particularly bad. The cleaners have just been shoving everything in the sink and not cleaning it for a while. As such, it built up a shedload of of disgusting scum. Then somebody managed to flood the sink (as the water wasn't draining because of the scum) and got the scum everywhere.

The tops still get cleaned on the whole.

That kitchen is the closest one to my room, but I try not to use it where possible.

The main problem is that it's way too small for the approx 20 people that are supposed to use it. People leave the odd thing in there after cooking, it builds up, becomes disgusting, the cleaners refuse to do certain things and then it becomes like that.

It's best just to avoid the bugger.

I can see why the cleaners would refruse. Did it not occur to the person who flooded the kitchien to clean the mess s/he made?

Clean up your own mess? You must be kidding me. Student common areas are, on the whole, for buggering over and scarpering.

By the way, I love the little darkened snippet that we get of Stel (AirRaven) in the mirror in the first photo. 'Tis very enigmatic.

My god.

I walked into the kitchen earlier, and noticed a plate with... Well.
I don't actually know what it could possibly have been when made. Something along the lines of chargrilled cockroach shells, perhaps?

...'scuse me.

I have never been happier to live in a flat where only 5/6 of us actually cook. Makes it all a lot cleaner.

I hear that's a delicacy in some parts of the world...

The Fairfax kitchen situation is unfortunate :/ My sympathies.

I'm going in for Physics with a foundation year (Didn't do Maths at A Level!). Really like the look of Fairfax house. How many of the rooms are small? Just worried because I have a double bass to bring with me!
And that kitchen! WOW!
