gun crime?
i also read it on that website that the hospital in nottingham has the highest rate of admitting gunwounds.
never been to nottingham myself so i shouldnt be too biased.
but stats don't lie

has anyone experienced crime in nottingham
bulgary, mugging,gun shooting ?

There's been a similar thread to this a few days ago with some comments on.

I was looking for some statistics, and looking in particular at violent crimes against the person (as this includes gun crime), there isn't much differen between Nottingham and Leicester (another East Midlands city). In fact, Leicester seems to have higher rates of violent crime against the person than Nottingham.

Also, bear in mind that it depends which part of the city you live in. Lots of students live in Beeston, which is part of Broxtowe Borough, where the violent crime rates are less than the national average.

I've never experienced any crime in Nottingham and I'll be starting my third year in September.

did anyone see the show? what was the best places to live?? or was it just the worst place?

I know i'm probably being pedantic, and i can't be bothered to explain why, but stats can lie. xx

Mousey - you're so, so helpful.

One quick point: a hospital may have excessively high rates of admissions/treatments for a particular thing because it is good/has experience in treating it/has doctors working there that specialise in that.

It is perfectly common for a gunshot victim who is shot nowhere near a hospital to end up being admitted to that hospital at some point for treatment of their wound because that hospital is better placed to treat them.

This is not a phenomenon confined to gunshot wounds!

i agree crana!

also i think that the gun related crimes are in the bad areas of the city, and not around the studenty areas *fingers crossed* but you know, if you stay out of the troubled areas then the guns wont fire at you. think its quite simple really :p: heh.

ive not let nottinghams reputation put me off from going, thousands of students a year come in and out of nottingham without any trouble, and im just hoping we can all be the same

Also, I believe you did your undergraduate at Manchester uni..? Manchester seems to have similar violent crime stats as Nottingham.

Not everyone who gets shot is hurt in "the bad areas". Recent(ish) high profile lethal shootings have occured in Sutton, Huthwaite, city centre nightclubs etc.. and I don't believe in the wholescale condemnation of entire swathes of city as "bad areas", either.

it's a better preventative strategy to not be involved with dealing or gangs and not LOOK like anyone dealing or involved in gangs. Hide guns from your dad if he's a bit wacko. Don't fight over 15 year old girls with a guy who has, as a teenager, beaten a man to death with a plank.

your chances of getting involved in gun crime in nottingham are extremely, extremely low. Anyone who would seriously avoid the universities here on that basis probably isn't thinking rationally enough to go to uni anyway. And anyone asking for anecdotal evidence about muggings and burglaries.. what can I say?

Edit: I hope you aren't advising people to stay in the "studenty" areas to avoid crime. Way to miss out on loads the city has to offer and irritate locals.

no im just suggesting that people (and saying that i) should try an avoid the bad areas of town.
but im not gonna live my life being paranoid, of course im not gonna miss out on anything because im worried of people with guns.

Reply 9

Just out of interest, what do you think are the bad areas?

Reply 10

Do you have to be so sarcastic?

Reply 11

i dunno, i dont live there yet! but theres worse areas in every town/city and the liklihood is that a lot of the crime would originate from there, and i dont want to be near it!

Reply 12

St. Anns and the Meadows are the two that spring to mind..

Reply 13

Hate to spoil your theory but the student areas always tend to be the roughest as the housing is cheaper etc and thats prob true in Nottingham aswell. Lenton is pretty rough, which is where loads of Nottms students live in the 2nd/3rd year.

Also Nottingham has got a bad reputation and all the crap in the media is completely over exaggerated. Lived here all my life, and its not that bad ive never been mugged/attacked. Its just like all big cities, you wouldnt walk on your own at night in certain areas, playing on your phone, with your wallet hanging out your backpocket.

Haven't read the article yet, but just feel like responding after reading "Stats don't lie" - you do realise stats are just whatever you interprete it, right? In fact isn't there this famous saying - "There are three types of lies: Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics."

Not sure if it's a "saying" I just know it's quite a well-known phrase. But even in news when you watch the politics you see stats are sometimes unreliable! Or the historical record of prohibition in America

Anyway in any cities there's gonna be crime. Just avoid going out on your own at 3am and avoid rough areas when you're on your own, especially as a girl, and generally you should be fine.

A couple of my mates have been mugged by some Asians with knifes on more than one occassion. Just don't walk through Radford/Lenton/Nottingham on your own at night.

If you stick to the Student nights out with a group of mates you'll be absolutely fine.

Is it really important they were Asian?

it doesnt matter whether they were asians or not. if the fact that this mugging was committed by asians, who do you think the public will blame -- the asians.

rather consider that these few muggers do NOT represent the rest of us asians.

dont want to debate the issue, but i wouldnt want to be the target of hate-crime because of the actions of a few renegade asian rogues. :frown:

Reply 19

I don't think Andy meant anything by referring to the muggers as Asians. The fact that they were was mentioned, but that doesn't mean that he was stating something deeper about stereotypes or anything. xx
