Easing Toothache - actual agony

Hey guys, I'm currently experiencing a really intense pain in one of my teeth, it almost feels like my mouth is hot as well. When my mouth is relaxed it's like a constant throbbing.

When I close my mouth the toothache becomes agony, it feels like the tooth is slightly more raised than usual and it's like I'm pushing it down and making the pain more intense.

Any ideas how I can ease the pain before I see my dentist? I've already taken paracetamol/ibrobufen but it hasn't done anything yet.

I've got a really bad toothache at the moment too! Brush your teeth for about 5 minutes, especially the tooth that hurts. Plus nothing helps more than an ice cold compress. Just hold that on your jaw where the pain is, and it should ease off & go numb! Always works reaaaaally well for me.

Hope you feel better soon!

When I had pain before getting a root canal done on one of my front teeth, I used clove oil to numb the pain.
Sure it tastes positively rank and it'll feel a little hot for a few seconds, but it numbs the gum. It actually helped quite a bit. Just pop some cotton wool soaked in the stuff over said tooth/gum and leave it there when you go to sleep

Edit: And you can buy it over the counter at the pharmacy too

Try and get a pain killer which is paracetamol with dihydrocodeine, called Co-dydramol. My dentist said it was the best painkiller for toothache. You can buy it over the counter, I think when I had similar trouble my Mum bought some from Boots initially. I had a persistant and rare tooth problem, which was agony so I can quite understand you can't be having much fun. Eventually I lost said tooth but I don't miss it!

There is also a variety of numbing gels available, Orajel Extra Strength being one of the best. Just takes the edge off things, especially when you are trying to get some sleep.

Hope your dentist can sort you out asap!

measure of whiskey, swill it a bit before you swallow.

Nurofen Plus, it has codeine in it. Basically you are wasting your time unless it has some form of codeine in it.

Root Canal? When I had it in my top second incisor, it felt hot, and all along both jaws ached as well as throbbing pains in the depths of the tooth itself. I just waited it out to be honest, it wasn't unbearable most of the time, just when the sporadic waves of agony hit.

Luckily, this was the nerve dying, so by the time I got to the Dentist for the drilling, I didn't need anaesthetic, I couldn't feel a thing in that tooth.

Sorry I'm no help with the pain relief as I didn't take any, but I've heard Ibuprofen would be good for both the swelling and the pain.

You have a tooth abcess, go to the dentists, you need root canal

I had a similar issue - I used ice cold water, ibuprofen and kept it topped up with a blob of sensodyne on the tooth. It worked. :s-smilie:

At work the dentists often use cold to test for tooth vitality, and as the tooth seems to be alive now (hence the pain) I doubt putting ice on it will help at all...

Just stick with your pain killers...

Paracetamol + ibuprofen spaced out (i.e. not taken at the same time, paracetamol then 2hrs later ibuprofen) is what we normally recommend.

The only thing that will cure it is getting to your dentist for a root treatment.

You can take 3 ibuprofen instead of 2 if the pain is too great..

i remember one morning in the early hours i woke up with the worst tooth and jaw pain EVER the whole of the left side of my jaw at the bottom hurt like hell, now im not a pussy with pain ive had 4 tattoos and had both knees dislocate over 100 times each but nothing was like the pain that morning

i actually woke up crying so i got up and got 2 co-codamol, took them as soon as they had disolved, waited an hour, did nothing so i took two more again drank as soon as they disolved, waited another hour, still did not touch me so i took two more

after trying to distract myself for another hour with reading, playing DS, watching TV, going on the net etc i was still in a LOT of pain so again i took two more tablets then i remembered i had one of those wheat bag things that you can heat up in the microwave or freeze in the freezer so i heated it up for about 2 mins, put it on my face and the pain went in about 2 mins

so yeah heat was the only thing that worked for me

I had an abscess after all! I had a filling in the tooth in the past, I'm pretty sure the dentist didn't do an amazing job.

I woke up this morning at 5am and had to sit over the toilet for nearly 30 minutes feeling like I was going to pass out/throw up, my tooth was in worse pain than I've ever felt anywhere. I had to phone the emergency dentist and they said they would manage to slot me in at 10:30, so I went and got an x ray, apparently the abscess was huge and had obviously been growing for many months so he understood that I must have been in a LOT of pain!

I got an electric shock from the needle he put in to numb my mouth and from then onwards he kept getting static every time he touched me, which was odd? He started by drilling away the filling and then slotted this thin sharp needle into the abscess, obviously I couldn't feel a thing. When he pulled the needle out it had puss all over it and he shoved it under my nose and made me smell it, it was RANK. Then he packed the tooth back in and sent me on my way to get some antibiotics! Feeling pretty damn good right now

Wow.. That's odd, I got put on antibiotics before having it drained. God, my experience sounds like nothing compared to yours!

If that's your first root canal I'd try to start eating on the other side.

You have a filling there now with no nerve so the tooth is brittle and much more likely to fracture.

You really need a crown on it to be honest as this protects it from fracture when you put pressure on it whereas a filling can cause a fracture if you put pressure on it. Like I said I'd avoid using that side the most if you want to keep the tooth for a long time.

Eugh that sounds awful. Especially the elecrostatic dentist and his instruments :lolwut:

Yep, mine was nothing like that at all, I don't even think I had much of an abscess, and I don't remember pus being involved. EDIT: I think I took antibiotics prior to going for treatment as well, so the swelling/pain had all gone by the time I went, it was just a case of drilling and filling.

It's good it's over now though
