how is it a choice..when society and fashion clearly makes the rules on how you should act and dress. If you dont follow it, you will be a social outcast, you wont be fashionable, you wont really be attractive will ya...well atleast not in the eyes of society.

If this is what you really think, you need to grow a backbone and acquire some self respect!

The question you need to be asking yourself is this:

Do you want to be a sheep, or a leader?

Leaders are true to themselves and when society tries to force them to change, ignores it.

'Society' today is driven by celebrity culture which, to quote on television show I used to watch, 'is the pursuit of the talentless by the mindless'. Step out from the crowd and be respected for who you are, not what other perceive you should be.
I dont think women are undermined in Western society at least. I mean the models, the objectification...well now its women and gay guys (a lot of whom are sort of feminine anyway) just doing it to themselves.

Oh god. Open your eyes. Yes women are still oppressed blah blah, but men these days are treated in exactly the same way pretty much.

Abercrombie and fitch use male topless models in their stores -those men are serving nothing but eye candy. Men are the ones generally who have to chat up girls, and there are naked male magazines.

And I don't feel like I HAVE to wear skimpy clothes in winter -I'm all for wrapping up warm. Your attitude to women is about as oppressive as you're making out society is - ever wonder if these women CHOSE to wear these things and act this way? That isn't oppression.

Do you think women in today's society are undermined and a bit oppressed. I mean as a woman i literally get sick at the fact that when i walk into a shop, i see magazines with naked women on them. When im walking across the street, even though its freezing, women think that they HAVE to wear something skimpy to feel the littlest bit attractive.
In shows, its always the women who are the ones who seduce the men by wearing barely anything or things that are soo skin tight.
In adverts, they sell things by making women seem soo sexual, i.e. women in barely anything.
I think women are treated as more of a sex symbol than as humans in media and society.

I just wanted to see if anyone else felt the same way??

1. Only the ones that allow themselves to feel that way.
2. WTF? Only tarts do that... and I have never seen a woman in freezing weather wearing skimpy clothing... you know why? because they have common sense.
3. Because women are seductive.... it's nice to show our 'power' stop moaning about it.
4. Sex sells, they do it to men too.

bull

it is your choice to follow the trend, your choice to wear the "fashionable" clothes. You cant wear a "short skirt skimpy top" combo becuase you like it and then complain that society forces you to wear it

It is strange how there was no skimpy fashion or pornographic magazines before the 60s when men were actually in charge. Don't apply your liberal agenda to society then moan when it doesn't pan out the way you wanted it to.
Reply 29
No, I don't. I'm not complaining about girls dressing 'skimpy', i'm saying they use their liberty to choose to dress like that.
Men and Women are both screwed over by advertising.

The area for concern really is the workplace, the absence of women in the House Of Commons is a concern, for example. The pay-gap also needs addressing.
Reply 31
No I don't. Men just aren't as easy to manipulate through advertisement. Well, they are, for instance the majority of beer is bought by them, and in America 3 beers have 80% market share.

Men seem to get the better resources? What do you mean? I don't think that language is sexist at all. The fact that 'he' is used to denote a sexless object is rather meaningless given that everyone knows it refers to a person rather than just a man.

The pay gap doesn't exist. Men work longer hours, in more dangerous environments, they move for work more, they don't take paternity leave etc. etc. So I guess the pay gap does exist, but it exists for a reason - because men deserve more money because they do more work. In a capitalist economy do you seriously think people are going to pay more to higher the same worker? Companies who employed women would have lower wages to pay out and would thus be more successful, so other companies would follow suit.

Furthermore women just aren't as politically motivated as men, perhaps they don't feel the need for control, who knows. But one only has to look at constituency meetings, and party conferences, to realise that womens attendance even at levels of governance that are open door is far lower than mens. I don't see why there is a song and dance about fields where the male:female ration is poor because men certainly do not get any such help; for instance they are drastically under represented in nursing, social care, teaching, and the home.

There were some initiatives being undertaken to encourage more men into teaching, though I can't remember what they were :P

Well obviously people get paid more for working more, but the problem lies where women get paid less for working the exact same amount, which can and does happen.

I'm sure they were all complaining about how undermining it was when they were paid.

Do women think that, or do morons, who have such low self-esteem that they feel even the way they have to dress needs to impress people?

Lemme think of the shows i've watched recently and whether that is true - Dollhouse...no, Trueblood...no (in fact Trueblood is massively geared towards turning on women...), The US Office...no, 24...no. I'm going to stop now, and just ask which shows you are thinking of.

I can't be arsed talking about adverts, because then we get into the whole 'men are potrayed as idiots' debate.

If there were ghettos, labour camps and gas chambers involved i'd see where you are coming from. As it stands though, dressing and acting in the way you have suggested only impresses people who happily take part in a society which you think undermines women. I'm not gonna dress up in white sheets to impress members of the KKK and then start complaining how they promote racism.

According to this thread - apparently not.

If women in society are being undermined, I think it's partly down to women like you. I really don't mean to offensive, but your post was just whiny and weak, and that is not how you get people to take you seriously.

If anything, arguments like yours detract from real issues of gender discrimination.

But if they were paid less for the exact same amount of work people would have a preference for hireing them. That is why the Polish did so well when they came over here from 2005ish. Then as there is a higher demand for them their pay goes up. Supply and demand means that equal work = equal pay. Also, you might be interested to know female owned businesses are much more likely to fail and also earn less money than male owned businesses. When you own your own business you are solely responsible for generating your own wage and there is no one to blame, yet they still fail more and earn less.
