Ah yes, I'm supposed to be writing something for the student version of that. Hrm. Any ideas what I could write about?

That's very kind of you!!! Mmm a real version of societies perhaps!? There seem to be a lot of them... but do they really work? I mean... it's just meeting once a term or on a weekly basis? I'm interested in Gymnastics, Musical Theatre and Japanese... perhaps Spanish but is it for Spanish people or people interested in Spain?
Is the vaccine against Meningitis C that important as they state??? :s-smilie: I asked my doctor about it and he said I shouldnt worry but he said the same thing for hepatitis B and now I'm going to be vaccinated against it because I think it's quite important...
What else? What about the subway? (or underground... or tube! as you prefer! :P) i've seen a Monthly paid Photocard which seems reasonable... 50pounds a month for zone 1, is it useful? I mean... a single ticket is 2 pounds isnt it? Also, do people go out in London or stay in he bars of the halls/university? Also, isnt there a LGTB society in UoL?
Thanks in advance... that's what I can think about right now! :P

Some of the societies are more active than others, obviously, but how active they are is really down to how much effort you are willing to put in. Afraid I don't know much about your societies of interest, although for Spanish I would imagine it's quite active as a fair number students take a language or are on a year in Europe course. You could help to improve British people's Spanish.

I would definitely get all your vaccinations done, unless you want to get seriously ill? Honestly, it's not worth the risk avoiding them, and once they've been done usually they're done for life. Students are highly at risk from contagious diseases being crammed together with a bunch of strangers in one big house (believe me, I got mumps or something like it last year and it was horrid).

I don't think it's worth paying for a travel card, because I rarely use the tube. I think it would be better for you to pay for single tickets initially, then if you start to use it often fork out the money for a travel card then.

Personally I didn't usually stray far from SK in my social life this year, but then I am a boring bastard. A few people like to go clubbing in some of London's big clubs: if you can find a group of like-minded people that's something you can do (none of my friends were that 'type').

There is a LGB club called IQ ('Imperial Queers', lol). I think it's fairly active, although a lot of gay students don't like to get involved in something so overt. Whether you want to make a big issue out of your sexuality is up to you, but you don't need to join a club to feel accepted; it's not a big deal.

Don't buy a monthly travel card. If you end up in halls there will always be a bus that can take you into central London - either the 9/10/52 from Albert Hall, or the 14 from Evelyn Gardens.

The tube doesn't run after midnight, whereas the bus routes aforementioned are 24 hours, and are only 5 minutes slower, if that. You save much much more money paying 80p each way on a night out than having a £50 tube pass which tbh won't be worth it if you don't use the tube everyday.

Isn't there some sort of student discount you can get on an oyster card if you get a form from the registry?

you can get a student travel card that allows you to get discounts when you buy period travel tickets.

Oyster is a really good idea for the pay as you go crowd. you stick some money on it and you can use it on bus and tube. I think it charges a slightly discounted rate for buses and tube travel and saves the hastle of paper tickets!

Id recomend getting one. It costs £3, which if you regester you get back when your done with the card!

Yes. it doesn't reduce the price of a tube journey - so it's £1.60 still for a zone 1 tube journey like on normal Oyster Cards.

However, bus fares are reduced to 40p (£1.20 normal, £0.80 with usual oyster) when you have a student oyster card. It is also flat rate, which means that you can go as far as you want on a single bus without worrying about crossing zones!

A must-have for next year!

you'll soon work it out. it comes with being in London. Basically if you want a bus back from central London, go to trafalgar square. Almost all buses routes converge there!

As I said, 9 10 14 and 52 will get you back to South Kensington, else it's a 35 minute walk. A few bus rides in fresher's week and you're sorted

Thanks!!! I always get lost with buses in Madrid... imagine in London! I might end up in Brighton!!! (that happened to me once... but from Bath to Bristol! lol)

Don't worry... with the Journey Planner (http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk), just enter in your starting point and destination, and it tells you the possible routes and times. Over the year however I've found it sometimes screws up, but most of the time its the best way to plan your journey.

Btw, on a different note... anyone planning to buy an AZ to London... don't, its a waste of money.

is it??? Well if you want to know where a street is... well We've got internet for that!

Thank you!

multimap.com is a good online map...

Also, if you want to see how IC or anywhere else in London looks like from the sky, go to maps.google.com, and somehwere in there you can enter in a postcode and it shows you an aerial view of that area.
