Loughborough?? Lancaster??

know there's going to be sooooooo many of these in the run up to the UCAS deadline, but I am really stuck.

Most people at school seem to have a uni they 100% want to go to and then an insurance. However my two top uni's require the same grades and to me practially seem on a par.

Loughborough downsides are:
- My family (cousins etc) lives there and say you have to go out to leicester/nottingham to get decent shops/bars etc.
- Loughborough as an area is a bit run down
- The whole uni appears slightly more run down then Lancaster

Lancaster downside is:
- The distance ( i live in London)
- The fact it's so far out of the rat race of London which I really want to come back to after my degree
- Theres only 10,000 students

But I really like them both, the coourse is the same for both, accomodation is as good for both. The libary slighty better at Lancaster, sports facilities slightly better at loughborough.

Anyone who's at either can you just give me a quick run down of the good AND bad points you have found.

THANK YOUUUUU

Lancaster has a uni?

I applied to both.
Having been to open days at both, i went for Loughborough. Lancaster was a lot more grey, concrete and the facilities they had to offer were not as good or as well equipped as Loughborough.

Similarly, Lancaster Uni is quite a way from the actual town if i remember rightly, which although bigger than Loughborough, the distance getting away from campus was very off putting.

Although Loughborough town isn't amazing by any means and the campus isn't in the town center, it's only about a 20 min gentle walk if you live where i do (new builds, near engineering and library), and it's a lot more open and welcoming.

The nightlife in Loughborough is fine. It's not exactly up to the same levels as a big city, but there is always something on every night, and usually you always end up having a good time and always bumping into at least one other person you know which is always good! If anyone says you need to go to Leicester or Notts to have a good night out they are lying. Loughborough is a party uni.

Not really sure if i've helped, but i chose Luff over Lanc.

Also, the train from St Pancras to Luff is direct and takes about 1.40 mins... much quicker than getting all the way up to Lancaster.
Guess it depends how you define decent shops/bars. There's no shortage of bars in Loughborough, and most of the standard high street stores. Admittedly not a huge number of shops, nor any large department stores, but Loughborough is a town and it's not as if Leicester/Nottingham are far. Back home in London I travel for as long to get to a decent shopping centre.

Parts of town are run down, but everything is on campus or the centre of town, you never need to venture to those areas.

Run down uni? I wouldn't say so.
Luffber.

Its a whole 5 minute bus ride from the actual CITY :woo: How dare you call it a town.

My friends are at Lancaster and it seems pretty similar to Loughborough in terms of halls and quality of study so I guess it depends on your course. Lancaster (I think) has bars for each college but no students union club so you would have to go into town, whereas Loughborough has the massive union as well as town which is much closer than Lancaster to the uni (10 minute bus ride from the library at Loughborough, it takes my friend 20mins by bus to get to Lancaster town center)

I couldn't say without visiting Lancaster, which I probably will be doing soon as I have a couple of friends going there.

It's weird, but I'm having this dilema and I'm here six year later,so if anyone could offer some good advice?

I've fallen in love with both, they both look lovely.
Unfortunately I didn't make the L'boro, open day, but based on looking around, it looks lovely !

I'm looking to do Psychology!
And, having lived in a massive city (Leeds) for years, I was wanting a smaller town to go to university, and I'm a fan of green spaces! But if I did want to go to have a bit of a city night out, I could get there, so !
Yeah, any advice on which of the two? Muchly appreciated (:

Hey guys
Great to hear you are considering Loughborough

E-m-I-l-y makes some good points in her post above - there is nothing to worry about r.e. nightlife as there is always so much going on here. As a campus university most of our nightlife is on campus (but there are places in town too if you fancied venturing out).

What I would say is that you need to make sure the decision is right for you - Loughborough is an amazing place but if you are looking for a big-city experience then it's not for you. We are a campus university and if that appeals to you then you can't find better - the feeling of community spirit is so inspiring and there is so much to get involved in.

It's important to look at all of the factors involved - when all is said and done you will be spending the next 3-4 years of your life at uni, so choose somewhere that you think will make you happy! Think about the course, the modules involved, the reputation, where you see yourself after graduation - ALSO don't forget career prospects, employability ratings, extracurricular activities and friendships with like-minded people. You should graduate from university with so much more than just a degree, so choose somewhere that you think will best shape you as an individual.

Good luck with making your decision - if you have any more questions about studying at Loughborough just ask

Amy
This is funny because literally 10 years later here i am confused between these two unis.
Im confused which is better, particularly the business schools. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that im an international student

Cons of lboro:
1) Smaller town
2) Overall is a little more expensive

Cons of Lancaster:
1) Not sure if its as international as lboro- for undergrad level

By area, I'd definitely prefer lancaster due to it being close to big cities like Manchester(where I got a bit of family) but aspects such as job prospects and the overall lifestyle are imporant to me. So, if anyone could help me that'd be great because i keep bouncing back and forth between these two

Hi @Mueez Khan,

I'm sure you've already checked out our School of Business and Economics webpages which detail what we can offer you. All of our undergraduate courses have the option of a placement year where we now have one of the best records for placing students in top businesses including 3M, IBM, Lloyds Bank, Microsoft, PwC, Morgan Stanley, Unilever, Waitrose, Rolls-Royce and Walt Disney, to name a few. With regards to employability, we are no.1 in the UK for employer-student connections and within the top 20 globally (QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2020).

We have an excellent international student community; you can read about their experiences here and you can find out how we can support you as an international student here.

Loughborough is a campus university, set on very large grounds and you can find all you need on site. Nottingham and Leicester are nearby if you fancy a change of scene; this will enable you to have the best of both worlds. If it's a city vibe that you're after, then Loughborough may not be the place for you. What I can assure you is that there are lots of societies and sports that you can get involved in so you really won't get bored.

Good luck in making a decision, you'll have a fantastic time wherever you decide to study.

Best wishes
Bindu
