''Engine system fault'' Ford Fiesta

Hi guys, I have a 1.4Diesel '58 reg fiesta (the type before the new type.) When I first got the car, a couple of times I would hear a beep, then a red light and my trip computer would say 'engine system fault' but it'd go off straight away

I took it to the garage and they diagnosed some exhaust valve that was gone. That seemed to fix the problem. However about 2 months after the same thing happened. I took it back. They found nowt. Then it was fine for 3 months

Now in the past week it's been doing the same. However this time the warning stays on. It seems to go if I accelerate very quickly in 2nd or 3rd gear (not helpful on 30mph road)

My grandad suggested it might be dust in the engine because diesel's are very 'fine tuned' ? Could this be the case? I really don't wanna take it back to the garage again!

Thanks and I'm terrible with knowing about cars so you may have to use basic terms :P

Is it still under warranty?

Wouldnt it still be under warrenty?

I wouldnt touch anything, just give them a call

Also how many miles do you do, your grandad might be right, it's basicly 'diesel dust' getting clogged up in the engine!

has the car been different to drive this week? sluggish at certain rpms for example? any smoke coming out of the exhaust?

The engine system fault light on the dash can indicate a number of problems hence why they can fix one thing and then it comes on again for a completely different reason.

Ideally you need to get it to someone with an odbII fault code reader to get more information so I can help, otherwise you'll have to take it over to Ford. I believe they charge something extortionate like £75 just to see what the problem is though so I'm not surprised you dont want to take it back to them!

It could literally could be anything from a battery issue to a problem with your turbo so helping over the forum will be difficult.

Ref: diesels being fine tuned, this is true on the common rail systems (which is what your car has) but the engines are generally sealed to dust and grime so thats unlikely to be the problem.
Show me your diesel dust... your diesel dust.

Yes it is still under warranty. It's the pain of having to take it there, then get lifts to college/Nan and Grandad's/Getting lots of buses. They can take a couple of days :frown: I don't do that many miles at all. It's got 12.5k on the clock 2500 of which I've done in my six months I've had it.

Thanks. If they couldn't find anything before though why would they now? And nope not lagging in performance at all, and seems to be less noisy than it used to be (though loud radio probably drones this out!) I shall check the revs but it's either when I turn on the engine or if I'm doing about 15mph. I've never had it when in 4th or 5th.

It does give out a lot of smoke when it's turned on (compared to my mum's) but again apparently this is a 'diesel thing'

So annoying!

modern diesels shouldnt be especially smokey but a bit of white/black smoke is nothing to worry about.

The reason they may find something now is it sounds like its an intermittent (worsening) sensor fault, as it fails it will become more easy to track down.

as far as "diesel dust" goes it could be a partially blocked fuel injector but you would be able to hear the car running rougher than usual.

If its still under warranty then take it in, try and work out when it comes on so you can actually show them whats happening. If the fault was not serious when they first checked it they may well have cleared it and not done anything about it (dodgy sensor connection for example).

Try doing a long motorway drive to clean the system out

That's what I'd do but you shouldn't have to OP, seeing as your Fiesta is new and still under warranty.

You might not like to do so but taking it to the garage is your only real option. Not much else you can do really and getting a detailed TSR-diagnosis by the engine experts round here (although interesting to read) isn't going to help fix your car ultimately.

to the garage with you. You NEVER touch a engine under warranty. All you do is fill the washers and check the oil, anything else and you are asking for trouble.

I shall check all my levels at the weekend. The beep didn't come on today so o.O

Thanks for all your help guys. I'll get it another week then may have to take it in. Bet they love me!

No, take it in, if the engine management light is on then you should get it sorted ASAP, not in a weeks time. You could be causing damage to the engine and leaving it a week won't look good when they interrogate the engine to see how long the light has been on!

I would get it sorted at the weekend.

Take it in and demand a courtesy car

This. If it's under warranty don't **** about, just call 'em up. Its the easiest and cheapest fault fixing you'll ever do on car - once its out of warranty it gets expensive :p:

Hi, I have the same issue with my Fiesta. Its a 1.4l Diesel as well, though its a 52 reg so considerably older. Still.
I also had a problem with the exhaust valve, which was fixed. But like you it came back.
I haven't taken it back to the garage though, mainly due to lack of funds, but also because I figured out that it happens only when the car is cold (left out overnight or whatever.) Does yours only happen then as well?

Anyway, now I know when to expect it I have figured out how to avoid it/recognise when its going to happen. It hasn't happened to me for several weeks.
Obviously this might not be the answer for you, especially since your engine would be that much less worn than mine, but what I'd suggest is to really closely analyse what conditions you're driving in when it happens. That way, if you do decide to take it to another garage/mechanic, it might help them figure out what the problem is.

Though actually it sounds like my fault went one step further than you, as sometimes the electrics actually cut out and the car would slow to a stop.

How strange! Thanks for your input, thinking about it, it does seem to be more when I first set off (so the car is cold because it was always outside.) What preventative measures did you take? It's only young. I shouldn't have to warm it up every time :frown:

Thankfully mine's not died yet! Do you feel that accelerating hard gets rid of the message? It does for me o.O

Have you not taken yours to the garage yet!?

That's alright lol, I was so suprised when you descried the same issue as me. Preventative measures I make are pretty simple, I do the whole warming it up a bit before I drive off (though I agree, you shouldn't have to do it in such a new car as yours!). But in general, when I feel it might be about to happen I just did the clutch a little and accelerate harder, like you said. It definitely sorts it out for me.
Stop worrying about what the garage thinks of you. You spent thousands on the car, it's under warranty, therefore they should fix it, no questions asked. If they even show the slightest bit of defensiveness towards you/your problem then I'd be writing to Ford's Head Office about it......

Do not mess with a car that's under warranty, you may void your warranty by doing so.

Well I took it in today, they took it out - never came on: How infuriating! So they phoned Ford's themselves and they said people with diesel's have had similar problem.

Basically it's the glow plug relay. It's sending false info to the engine making the computer say rubbish. It just requires a new part, nowt wrong with the car itself
