A distinction is the highest grade you can acheive in btec, so DDD must be the same as AAA.

MMM on a national diploma is actually CCC, its worth 240 points unless your on an early years BTEC, where it'll be worth less. DDD in a national diploma is the same as AAA at A-level.

I just look at them entirely separately... couldn't really compare them or make them equivalent.. that's why they're different qualifications! Unis depending on the courses they're taking students for may consider them, of course, alongside any other qualifications/an applicant's PS, but that's their job. I wouldn't see MMM as BBB myself.

Why is it that a merit grade, the second highest grade you can acheive, is the same as getting a C grade? This doesn't make sense.

To get a the same amount of ucas points as a BBB you need DDM which is 320 points whereas BBB is 300, but you get the point.

Look at them separately. No way is the same amount of academic ability required to get BBB at A-Level to that of getting MMM on a National Diploma, that is for sure. The fact that they're equal is just a UCAS thing, in reality A-Levels are regarded more worthwhile. Not saying that BTECs are worthless though, I'm on my 2nd year of the ND in IT and have learned a ton more doing this course than I would have doing A-Level in IT.

The fact that they are equal in terms of UCAS points does not- in my opinion - make them equal qualifications, that's like saying an A in Maths is equivalent to an A in Media Studies, technically they might be the same but everyone knows the A in maths is wayyyy more impressive.

They are completely different.
For BTEC the range of grades go from PPP - DDD.
But for A Levels there is a much wider range: E-A.
It all goes on points anyway sooo if you know your grade.. sayyyy you got DMM, that would be a certain number of points, and you could then work out what grade that would be equivalent to at A Level.
Hope that helped a bit!

Setting aside ucas points, this doesn't explain why a merit is not a B grade equivalent. The question is why is a merit a C if its the second highest grade for btec?

Well I can't answer that for you, but I do a BTEC (sometimes wish I didn't but hey) and in all fairness MMM is not difficult to get at all, so I don't think it should be the same as BBB.

I joined an Apprenticeship scheme after leaving school and a BTEC in Engineering was included. After 2 years, I decided that I wasn't suited to that kind of career and left to do A Levels. I have an A after every module in my 4 subjects with just the June exams left to go. This was achieved with a fair bit of independent work. I got DDD in the BTEC without ever studying outside of class (1 week of lessons every 3 weeks). If you're doing a BTEC then fair play to you, but in my opinion it is far easier. A Levels are easy enough with the constant opportunities of resits. I'm not sure what universities think, and, ultimately, they're the ones who matter.

They should really make further education more difficult so that an A or B or Distinction garners a little respect. Or at least limit the number of resits!

Reply 16

a distinction is a A at a-level
A Merit is a C at a-level
and an Pass is a E

But universities prefer A-Levels not B-tecs... but some don't

Reply 17

Stupid question really. For most courses at universities, A levels will be a lot better and MMM will not be equivalent to BBB. For very vocational courses or apprenticeships, MMM might well be more suitable and worth more than BBB.

Agree with this. I'm doing a BTEC and will get DDD grade and that will definitely give me a massive head start come university over anyone with A Levels for my course.

That is like saying getting a level 5 in year 6 SATS is the same as a first class degree.

Well, sort of...
