Tmj

My jaw clicks when I eat (it drives my mum mental) and my dentist just diagnosed me with TMJ. I've googled it, but all that comes up is stuff about how insurance companies in the USA rarely pay for treatment. It hurts like hell when I open it widely (which I'm not doing at the moment).

Basically, he told me not to chew with my front teeth, avoid crunchy food and not open my jaw excessively (sp!?). Does anybody know how long it takes to get better if I follow his advice?

I've had this for over a year, had really bad jaw lock when it began but now it's just clicking a popping. I haven't had a problem with ear ache fortunately. I think my jaw has grown more square and it's become out of line with the rest of my face, doh!

it's temporo mandibular joint dysfunction/pain.

It's basically when you get sharp pain/muscle spasms in your jaw/neck/ear area when you do so much as yawn or eat.

I personally get ringing ears, horrible headaches and cracking jaw pain from it. it's awful.

is there any medical condition you dont suffer from?

My jaw clicks when I open it, but it doesn't hurt. I think it's because the tendons are loose for me though.

My friend had TMJ. She eventually got surgery for her jaw.

I don't think you can cure it per-se without surgery. However, just be very careful as I hear that if you don't do as your doctor advises, it will wear the joints out more.

Edit: just realized you're not American

i have it :\. it's such a pain in the ass [or jaw, or whatever]. I had mumps at the same time we discovered it - and its never gotten any better. I can't really chew with my front teeth due to other problems, but at least you can continue with that.

I just have to be reeeeaaaly careful when I yawn :\

Wow thats so weird..I have over the last 2 months started getting a clicky jaw so sometimes it hurts to open my mouth/i can't open it much, or it clicks when i eat/drink. I had mumps at xmas..I wonder if it's related

I presumed it was because my wisdom teeth were coming through and this was upsetting my mouth in some way!

My dentist said that I had TMJ so I went to another dentist that specialised in this area. She gave me a removable brace (which is completely invisible to anyone else) which has completely sorted my TMJ and all the pains that go with it (head/neck/back etc). It works by widening your jaw slowly and has also helped to straighten out my teeth! Not all dentists believe in this - and obviously it is up to individual to decide whether to try it or not.

It is called the "advanced lightwire functional appliance" (or ALF). My dentist works out of Lavender Barn, Bishops Stortford (Dr. Marina Carew): www.greatsmile.org.uk

I suffer from TMJ. Thankfully it doesn't really bother me when I eat, but it does cause me to suffer from an aching jaw most days and apparently it is also the cause of my bad neck pain.

I suddenly feel like my name means so much more.
Not sure if it's bad or good though =S

I have a really painful clicky jaw too. I can't open it too wide without it stopping, if I carry on opening then it clicks. I hate it when I yawn 'cos it goes through the click and its so painful but theres nothing I can do to stop it.

My mum has it too and she went to see a doctor years ago who told her it was the worst jaw he had seen in someone her age and that he could give her a replacement but that would only last 10yrs then she would be screwed. I can't stand next to hear when she opens her mouth, the grinding noise goes through me.

Apparently its quite a common thing

i have it too. seems to be more common than i first thought. My doctor said mine had developed due to my love of hard toffee when i was younger. Find it very painful to open my mouth past a certain point and sometimes move it in a certain direction. my doctor told me to leave it for a while and it should start to improve, it didn't so i went back to see her and she said give it a little more time, if not we need to think about surgery to repair parts of my jaw that are causing the problem..
