The football rivalries that never were.

We know about the great football rivalries. Rangers vs Celtic. Barca vs Real Madrid. The Milan teams.
For a rivalry to run this deep, in my opinion you need two things;
i) Teams connected in some way - whether this is local teams, teams who have deep history, teams who share a stadium, teams who are the only contenders in their league, year on year
ii) Teams who are of a similar quality - if two teams are local but are of vastly different quality, there isn't much sense being rivals.

But what about the ones that just don't make any sense? Do you feel like you rival any other team even though it just doesn't make any sense?

What about, say, Liverpool vs Arsenal? I know a lot of people here (Arsenal soc) don't like Liverpool. We kind of fit the criteria above (often vying for 3rd and 4th in the EPL), but not really. If anything it's flattering that they still see us as similar quality! We're looking like winning the same stuff this year, anyway.

Do you see any team as a rival to yours, even though it really shouldn't be? Are my criteria wrong?

Forest are and always will be our rivals regardless of anything. Arsenal? Please, Arsenal fans need to get overthemselves if they think we are rivals, hell this season we arn't even in the same league as them metaphorically speaking. Arsenal gave us our worst moment on the pitch probably and we applauded them for it. That's not a rivalry and if people knew their history a bit better they wouldn't even think it.

Never understood why Stockport fans hate us so much.

I have no idea what you're talking about or why you felt the need to mention it. Hurry up and get knocked out of the Europa League already.

:frown:

They must have been similar quality at some point? I mean Leeds were a prem team not so long ago at all, and maybe 80s/90s they were similar quality? Idk.

Not really. It's not meant to be a dig at Arsenal (or Liverpool!) if that's how it came across...it was just the first example that came to mind.
Do you think the two criteria are right?

I'm pretty sure he was being polite and saying Arsenal have been a lot better than Liverpool this season.
I don't understand the Arsenal -> Liverpool hostility, that's partly what this thread is trying to unearth. Why do rivalries like this exist? It's not logical.

Yeah quite a while ago. :frown: Actually pretty much everyone hates Leeds, we were voted most hated football team in about 2008. :frown:

Leeds were a v.dirty team, built up a bad reputation for themselves.
The stuff on here is a joke for the most part. Goodness sake, if there's anything such thing as two clubs being friendly it's Arse and Pool. They have a huge amount of respect for one another in general.

Never really had a problem with Arsenal fans. What I have found though is that some have some sort of superiority complex. They seem to look down on us because they play amazing football and we apparently play **** football

I like Liverpool, not a massive Gerrard fan or Babel after the quarter a couple of seasons back, its just enjoyable to see a big team do badly. Combination of schadenfreude and British desire for the underdog to do well.

Same as Deshi really. I always liked Arsenal and I thought Arsenal fans quite liked us but the majority on here seem to really dislike Liverpool.

The only time I've had problems with Arsenal fans in real life was in the Scream pub in Liverpool in the CL game at Anfield. When we scored there were a large group of Arsenal supporters near the bar who had been tossers all night, and one of them then punched the barmaid in the face when we went ahead and the others all started cheering (boys and girls). That positively disgusted me, and my friend, who is a rather large guy, kicked the lot of them out. Utter tossers they were tbh.

Pretty much this. I hate Man U, hate Chelsea, but really don't mind Arsenal. I want them to win the league this year.
I live in Luton, they hate Watford, and vice versa... I don't understand this as we're not even in the same county... And its extreme HATE.

Apparently they both hate Millwall too, but hating eachother comes first then Millwall, and that's in London (??).

But the hatred is bad, to the point that I don't tell people I work with that my fella is from Watford, I tell them he's from Windsor where he works lmao! I wish I was joking but I'm not...

Crazy as Watford and Luton aren't even in the same league haha!
Celtic and Porto. As far as European rivalries go, it had potential. Played each other in the Champions League with home wins to each side before taking to the field in the UEFA Cup final. Both teams feel injustice at the other's conduct: Celtic believing Porto dived and Porto believing Celtic were being heavy-handed. Teams are pretty evenly matched and it goes to extra-time. There's one sending-off, a terribly late winning goal, then another sending-off. Managers trade thinly veiled insults. Players trade insults. A Porto player even moves to Rangers.

Then, we played them in a friendly in the USA 5 years later. FAIL.

Celtic won though.
I don't know that there are many you can think of that never were. I can think of ones that shouldn't have been - the rivalry between Crystal Palace and Brighton is the one that mystifies most football fans. I can't wait for it to be renewed next year now Palace have been doomed by Paul Hart.

But rivalries than never were? Just pin any two biggish/localish teams together. But rivalries are built on a history, usually of ill-feeling, sometimes spates of violence, and often things that run deeper even than that such as politics or religion. Two similar sides opposed to each other can sometimes claim to have a rivalry but it's not really a rivalry in the proper sense.

We have a rivalry in some senses with Liverpool because of all of the stuff that went on under Clough (I guess the rivalry really went pretty wild after Clough's comments re: Hillsborough), but I've never really considered it proper. Our rivals to me are Derby, Sheffield United, then any other local team plus all the Yorkshire scum.

Fail redeemed, then :p:
This is exactly the sort of reply I was looking for, I didn't even know that those teams had issues at all, thanks :yy:

I quite like Liverpool. :erm:

Arsenal and Liverpool isn't even remotely close to a rivalry so the thread fails since the principle example isn't an example at all. Leeds/Chelsea could be one, but their rivalry is based on years of fighting it out for the Biggest Bunch Of ***** In The Country award so even that kinda makes sense.

In other news, Mr Meskell should try holding Alt and pressing 0163 while typing.
