Tongue Biting

Right this may sound like a strange thread, but literally for years i have had the annoying habit of intentionally biting and chewing my tongue, often so badly that it bleeds, and really cannot stop doing this all the time, so my tongue is always covered in sores which i still continue to chew! i have noticed that it becomes a lot worse when i am stressed, but still do it quite a bit the rest of the time. Has anyone heard of people doing this before or any idea if it is harmful to me in the long term? or any idea how to stop it? i have tried chewing gum etc instead but its kind of impossible to keep gum in your mouth permanently!

Yes I know someone who used to do it. Then we were in a car which braked suddenly and he bit a hole in his tongue. That stopped him.

My dad always does it too but my dentist guilt trips him every time he has a check up.
Anyway, with all these habit things it's just as tricky to realise you're doing it. I used to bite my lips till they were blue and bruised because I was nervous but I just had to realise I was doing it and stop. Obviously that's easier said than done though.
