Calling Glasgow to appeal against rejection.

No, I can't say I have. There will be a reason why they have not offered you a place, and if you are lucky they might tell you that reason. As said above they give out so many more offers than they have places available.

Should I call them myself or get the school involved? Our school is run by utter clowns though and my UCAS referee probably never wants to see me again, so I'd rather do it myself, but if they'll listen to teachers instead, I might have to do that :s-smilie:

If they were ever going to accept you, they wouldn't have declined you an offer. Sorry, but that's the way it is. They won't change their mind, and them giving out more places than people accept is not a valid reason for them to reconsider.

On results day, they usually have something like 6 spaces available, or so I was told last year at one of the open days. They locate these spaces to people who have narrowly missed their offer. So they will get the place. Is your course in extra? To be honest it doesn't look very likely that you'll get in this year :frown:
edit: unless you had a reason last year for not getting the results they require?
I am completely miserable.

It is worth a try I suppose!
I, along with people in my school, who applied for English Lit at Glasgow and met, if not surpassed, the entry requirements (AABB/AABBC etc) and have just been rejected also... so it may be a long shot?
Good luck though either way, you wont know until you try!

Thanks.

Do you think they might let me onto a less popular course like Classics so I can pick up Lit later?
I think in theory you could go on to a less popular course and then switch across. I know several people who have changed their degree course.

However, if you want to 'switch' and change to English lit you'll still need to do all the required aspects of the course to enter Honours, so you can't get around the need to do the language course.

I really appreciate your info. I was planning on taking Classics and Latin as outside courses anyway.

EDIT: What does "Open for new applications, closed for Extra" mean on UCAS?
ArcadiaHouse
I really appreciate your info but I'm a little confused. Does that mean I'd need to do Classics and Latin for two years, and switch to single honours English Lit in third? English Language is a requirement in first or second year to do single honours English Lit.

No, you wouldn't be allowed to do Honours English if you have not done the first and second year courses, as well as the required English language course. So you could do Latin and/or Classics, but you would still need to do all the English courses. Does that make sense?
I'd give them a call. They might just tell you to go through clearing, but I'd say it is worth calling and explaining how much you want to go there and why you think you would be suitable.

At the end of the day, you have nothing to lose by calling them, so why not?

I see. So it could go:

1st year: Classics, Latin, English Lit
2nd year: Classics, English Lang, English Lit
3rd year: English Lit
4th year: English Lit

Yep, that's what I mean. I'm not sure if Classics has any requirements, but that's easy to check on the course catalogue.

+rep

Have you ever heard of anyone not getting onto their outside course choices? :o:

Erm, good question! I know for psychology you won't get onto Honours if you didn't UCAS it and for my course (geography) you need to achieve at least a B in second year geography to get in. I'm not too sure about others though.

I think if it comes down to them not having enough places, it goes to those who applied for it through UCAS, and then probably using grades and a lottery. Although I don't think this is all that common.

So if anyone drops out of Lit, do you think it's more likely than not that I can pick it up? On the Edinburgh forum they said they'd never heard of anyone not getting their outside course. Hopefully people will drop out. :ninja: I need to get my foot in the door first, though ...

EDIT: Could I still do joint honours Classics and English if I can't get onto English lit in the first year?

They usually manage to factor in that people will do the course as their outside subject, so I think it's quite rare for people to not get on that course. Again, I think it's only psychology that has that problem.

If you don't do level 1 and 2 English you won't be able to do Honours.

OK. Thank you. I'll see what they say on Monday.
At Glasgow you could apply to do a less popular humanities course, as in your first year you have to take two or three extra subjects which you can choose to carry on with. Have you just received retake results or something? If nothing's changed since they rejected you then I can't see them changing their mind for no reason tbh! But worth a try
Don't get your hopes up, but I guess it's worth a shot if you really are that desperate for a place there and would otherwise constantly be thinking "what if." It'd be best to get it sorted now though, I'd imagine... there are so many applications this year, so much so that it doesn't look as though Clearing will be as much of a help as it might have been to applicants in previous years.
