Persuade me to go to Aberdeen...

Well it looks as if my only option is to settle for Aberdeen. But the trouble is I don't want to go. I can't think of many positives for the university and I get a severe headache every time I think about going there.

Aberdeen's a fairly decent university but it's much better at humanities than it is at the sciences. And that's a problem seeing as I'm going to study Mathematics.

Another problem is that Aberdeen looks like quite a boring and miserable place full of miserable people. I just can't see any attraction for the city of Aberdeen. When people think of Aberdeen they think of oil. I don't care about bloody oil though, it doesn't concern me in the slightest.

I've also heard that Aberdeen doesn't have a Student Union. Well that's going to be a bit boring then isn't it? No societies, no nothing.

So may you people do me the kind honour of persuading me to go to Aberdeen, because at the moment, I'm dreading it?

Ive picked Aberdeen as my insurance and i think its a great second choice uni behind Bath. Its got really nice bulidigs and u wont be bored. They have a student union but its small but there are plenty of societies. Aberdeens a nice town and has lose of bars and clubs. but if u want the big ones Edinburugh is only 2 hours away.

The city ain't bad at all. Loads of cool bars, clubs, pubs and restuarants to suit most tastes. Granted it's a bit of a dissapointment that there isn't a big bar or club on campus that is the centrepiece of the social scene (they had the place on Littlejohn street but I think it's closed, I think) but the city centre isn't far away. And there are quite a few societies and sports clubs. Having said that, living as far away as Aberdeen when you're from London can be miserable if Aberdeen isn't your kind of place. Just go there, if you haven't already, to have a look. If you don't like it, you don't like it. Just go through clearing or try again next year.

Do it or I'll kick yo' ass.

I couldn't possibly be so cruel as to convince you to go somewhere so depressing. Suicide is a much more viable option.

When people think of Edinburgh, they think of banks. I don't give a **** about banks. I still want to live in Edinburgh.

God only knows where that logic is coming from. There are a huge number of societies associated with Aberdeen Uni. It has a Students' Association, to which those societies are affiliated.

Moreover, it will have a students' union by the end of summer, I believe. Not a traditional nightclub style one, admittedly. King's College is in a fairly quiet, residential area with a few pubs and shops; if you want a nightclub, go into town - where Aberdeen's old union used to be.

It can't be that bad, surely? :o:

Why somebody have to "persuade" you to go wherever? You got to do it for yourself. I now have to choose between Dundee and Aberdeen and I am facing hard times. Is there anybody currently studying there kind enough to inform me about the university and the city, as unfortunately I live on the other end of Europe
RM, if you need persuading then you clearly don't want to go. And if that's the case, then don't. Go through Extra or Clearing or reapply. Or suck it up and go to another uni, you've got 2 offers. I got rejected by Glasgow too, and it was my first choice but I didn't kick up the fuss that you have over it. You have to accept that you're going to face rejection in life, you can't just have everything handed to you on a plate, and even if you've worked the hardest that you can, sometimes there are people who are better than you and that's just the way it is.

I assume you mean studying in Aberdeen as apposed to Dundee.
From my point of view the university is pretty good, the campus is a nice environment to study, whether its the library or your department building (in my experience at least). The sports facilities are excellent with the new Sports village, very cheap aswell compared with commercial facilities. The new library is being built, and tbh there isn't much wrong with the QML imo, i get out of it what i need too. Loads of societies/clubs going on, think all that sort of stuff can be found online.

Aberdeen as a city is pretty good. Obviously its not in the same league as Glasgow or Edinburgh, but they're only a £10 bus/train away. I've always liked the combination of City/University/Coast, the beach is 5mins from my flat and on a nice sunny day with the afternoon off from uni heading down to the beach with mates is pretty damn good. Coming from a small town in Cornwall, Aberdeen is more then enough for me. The nightlife is pretty good, plenty of bars/pubs/clubs. Shops are Ok, I wouldn't say they're amazing but there's a bit of choice. If you're planning a massive spending spree then go to Glasgow for sure. I've always thought the weather was better then people tell you.

Like i've said, i come from a small town where there isn't a lot to do so my opinion of Aberdeen is comparing with home and from visits to Glasgow/Edinburgh. Anyone from Glasgow/Edinburgh may well have a different opinion all together. I've never been to Dundee but i think Aberdeen would be the better choice.

Thank you for the information  Actually, I haven't been to Dundee either so concrete comparison is impossible. but at least I have some friends at Dundee. I'm also from a small town, so I would really prefer somehow quieter place (as much as possible, with student life and the fuss about). My brother is in Edinburgh, so I'm bound to visit the big city often and Aberdeen seems like a more hmm.. "old school"/classical city than Dundee - as far as I saw via Google Earth and photos :P

Other then the ~20 minute window of students going too and from lectures the campus is pretty quiet and the university is away from the city center.

Edinburgh is a lovely city, i went there for a couple days to see the sights etc, really enjoyed it.

Thank you, Herr  What about the weather?
The weather is pretty good, less rain then the West Coast. This past Winter was pretty bad regardless of were you were in the UK with snow and ice. Now the weather seems to be picking up again, more sunny days. It is cold in the winter, but i'm a human radiator so you'll find me in a t-shirt no matter what time of year lol. I was told it always rained, was windy and cold. In reality while some days it is like that, for a northern city it ain't that bad.
Best bet would be to keep an eye on the forecast from time to time.
