I would probably think Mandarin since that's what nearly all universities offer. Mandarin is spoken nearly all over China while Cantonese is spoken mainly in Hong Kong. If your degree includes a stay over in China, then I'm 99% sure it's Mandarin you will be untaking.

And don't think that by knowing one type will mean it's easier learning the other! I have been to Chinese Sunday school for like 9 years (and have forgotten nearly everything! But I'm still fluent in speaking/listening!) but when I started learning a bit of Mandarin as well, it's like a different language. Most non-orientals think that the same symbols are used in both languages but they really aren't! And yea, you have to learn 4 different accents if you want to master Mandarin......

And yea, I can just about remember how to write my name in Cantonese, lol.
