You're right, just out of curiosity. What year did you apply?

I applied last year.
Why do you want to study law?
I don't understand why you are applying for Business Finance if you want to do law, particularly if you are willing to take a gap year in the event of no offers. Maybe look at AAB unis for law instead? It could be difficult to write a PS that was convincing for both, and this could weaken your chances accordingly.

For your PS, maybe use the reviewing service on here?

Going to a state school isn't an advantage per se but Oxford will contextualise your GCSE results so they will see if you did better than your school average.

Good luck!

That is true, I have been contemplating on whether to read law or Business Finance as my insurance. Durham has a facility where I could send a separate personal statement so that shouldn't be an issue. After your comment I think i may look to study law at another "top university" (considering that I wouldn't mind getting rejected, would take a gap year off)

Any suggestions?

Thinkinf Lancaster or Warwick.

Ah I didn't know about that, that's great, so if you really would be happy with Business Finance of course it's fine. Otherwise, of those I would personally choose Warwick as I have a friend who went there and loved it, but that's just because I don't know anything about Lancaster! A post in the Law forum might help you with choice, as will researching the courses, try to visit if you can (you can add your other four choices in track after putting in your application with Oxford, so don't feel too much time pressure for them).

I forgot to say that you won't get LNAT results until February 2012 so unfortunately you have to apply without knowing results :frown: but it's normal to feel MCQ time pressure.

Nottingham University offered several people I know with mitigating circumstances, including myself, AAB for law despite claiming they would offer AAA. I know it's not set in stone but I would suggest looking at the course.

Oh right thanks, where else did you apply?

Right, so I got my grades in the summer AS:

Economics - A
Geography - A
History - B (Re-sit in January, I didn't take History for GCSE) so perhaps taken into consideration?
Maths - B (42% on C2!! C1/S1 were 85%+) So re-sit

Also it is mandatory for our school to do the Welsh Bacc (UCL, King's, LSE, Oxford accepts it; apparently) Carrying on 4 subjects to A2.

However spoken to teachers and they agreed to predict A*A*AA on my reference.

Would that affect my application?

A couple of days ago I sat the LNAT, boy that was difficult (had to guess the last 5 questions) not entirely sure when I would get my results.

My GCSE results weren't the best either: 3A* 6A B.

Yes I am passionate about this subject, read books, completed relevant placements in court, bank, trade insurance company and I think my main selling point would be that I speak fluently in 5 languages and studied law at the Oxford Summer Courses. Also come from a diverse background, raised in Malaysia.

I am applying "with mitigating circumstance" and from a state school. No Oxbridge offer for over 3 years! Perhaps that would be an advantage?

I understand that this question is very vague, and the standard offers varies every year. But I would like to know your personal opinions based on your knowledge and experience.

Other university choices:
LSE
UCL
King's
Durham (ABB entry for Business Finance if something went terribly wrong)

I understand that may be overambitious but I'd be more than happy to go for a gap year if I got all rejects.

Sorry I did try to keep it as concise as possible, also if anyone would like to have a look at my personal statement I would appreciate that.

Thanks!

forget about lse with those grades

Would just like to know which college takes the most applicants for law.

Thanks

If you're good enough, you should get a place regardless of college.
I didn't know this thread existed. I have nothing to say really except hi.

I hear that because of the sheer number of applications they get, UCL tend to instantly reject anyone who didnt get AAA at AS level, unless there is something else (maybe your LNAT) that is OUTSTANDING about the application.
This would be particularly true for such a competitive course as Law.

Having AABB still means you still have a shot at Oxford, particularly if you have a strong LNAT score and more importantly, essay, and with such strong predictions.
Make sure your personal statement focuses on the academic side of law to show your enthusiasm - Oxford tutors just want to admit intelligent people that they will want to teach, and do not care one little bit about your extra curriculars (though this will need to be mentioned for your other universities so make sure there is a paragraph on it)

This. I got into Oxford with AABB at AS, and one of the B's was in Law...

I think you misread what I said; "Having AABB still means you still have a shot at Oxford".

I'm confused. It's far too hot today...

Definitely, hottest October day on record. No time to be stuck inside working on an application.

Right guess you were on the same boat as me!
Just out of curiosity, what were your GCSE grades?
Hey, I'm in Year 11 and it has been my dream to attend Oxford and study law since I was young. Therefore I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me, that could perhaps better my chances or portray myself as a more attractive applicant. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What was the LNAT multiple choice out of back in 2006? Was it also 42, like it is now?

No, it used to be out of 30 - it only changed last year.
