2500 for men, 2000 for women.

To lose weight, significantly reduce your calorie consumption [maybe by 50%] to begin with. You will lose weight.

Reply 2

2000 for a woman i think (2500 for a bloke). and less to lose weight.

you count them by looking at the 'kcal' value on the foods you eat, add up how many calories you take in.

to lose weight properly as people who know (theyll come) you need to eat properly. so, a balanced diet - not just not eating, not just missing out carbs or protein or whatever. you need everything in moderation

hmm - is not slightly decreasing your calorie intake (but to no fewer than say ~1,500? someone who knows the basal minimum correct me here!) & increasing your energy expenditure (exercise!) a significantly more healthy & sustainable way of loosing weight than just extreme calorie cutting?

with the added bonus of associated cardiovascular benefits & from an aesthetic point of view, balanced diet-exercise-achieved bodies look far better than starvation-victim ones..

If you wanna lose weight you need to create a calorie deficit. Basically, you have to burn more calories in a day than you consume. Watch the weight drop off!

Reply 5

And don't eat less than 1200 kcals a day because your body will go into starvation mode, which in turn will slow your metabolism and make it harder for you to lose the weight.

Reply 6

What you need to do is record how many calories you eat a day to the nearest 100gram for a week, and see if you either - put on weight, maintain weight, lose weight.

So weigh yourself at the beginning of the week and at the end, in the same conditions, ie. first thing in the morning with no water. and measure the change

Do that and report the results and we'll go from there.

i stil find al this confusing, for example, how do u no how much is in a banana? or in one slice of pizza rather than 2? and how can u no how many calories u burn off a day?

Yeah, a 'fat skinny' person doesn't look good because they've lost weight but a lot of it is muscle, the fat is still there and its not toned. But someone who exercises does look toned.

You can't know precisely how many calories you burn in a day- it depends on your weight, etc. But watching telly for an hour burns around 80 kcals, for example.

Reply 10

You say that you can't know precisely and then go on to say that watching telly burns 80 calories an hour?

www.calorieking.com

massive database of typical calorie amounts, eg. in an apple. if pizza then look on the packaging, or if it's a takeaway check out the website and nutrition information of the website, if that fails e-mail them and ask them. it is a little bit of effort but can be helpful.

Reply 12

I said it burns around 80 kcals. That isn't an exact figure. But thats an approximation. I never said it was exact.

Well the best way, I would say, would be to do as follows. The key is to lose weight and KEEP IT OFF.

Firstly, work out your BMR.
http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/metric-bmr-calculator.php

This is your Basic Metabollic Rate. This is the energy you use up by staying alive. Its all passive. Now add 300 to 600 calories onto this, depending on how active you are. (Be Honest here!)

Now then, the number you have, is the amount of calories you would lose without doing any other activity apart from your body's functioning throughout the day.

Your Passive Calory Loss. (It should be in the region of around 2000 - 3000 calories)

Secondly, work out a sensible exercise schedule.
People always say that it is sensible to do exercise during a diet. There, they would be wrong. IT IS VITAL!

By excerising, you slowly build your body's muscles. This will, by itself, increase your daily Passive Calory Loss, allowing you to lose more weight without trying!

Also, it will build your cardiovascular fitness, facillitating you do more exercise in the future and take part in more physical sport. this being a fun and more sustainable way of losing calories.

Remember that for every mile you walk, you will lose roughly 100 calories.
A two mile walk every day, would be excellent. Jogging would be even better.

Finally, chrunch the numbers. Nothing Else!

Add together your Passive Calory Loss and your daily exercise calory loss. You need to eat approx. 500 calories less than that every day. By doing this you will lose 1/2 kg, every week.

For example, a Passive Calory Loss of 2500 and exercise of 300 means you would lose 2800 calories a day, if you ate nothing. You need to be eating around 2300 (2800 - 500) carlories a day to lose 1/2 kg every week.

(7000 calories loss = 1 kg weight loss)

Nowerdays, everything has nutritional Information on it so counting your daily calories should not be a problem. Remember, if in doubt, always try to overcount your calories. This way, at least, the worst that can happen is you losing more weight than expected.

Also remember that when you initially start a diet, your body removes a large amount of its glucose stores and water along with it, meaning you will instantly lose about 1 - 3 kg. Remember, that is not weigth loss! That is not useful in actaully losing fat! You musn't fall into that false sense of security by thinking that you are a weight losing machine! You are not! No one is.

Losing weight is a long process. Much like reading this post- eek. Ive gone on for too long now!

I Hope This Helped,

Good Luck,

Vazzyb
