calling up med schools on results day!

Basically, i have no offers! and if i get the grades (hopefully i will, this summers been driving me mad), i plan to call up all the uni's and ask them if they have any places..i know there probably won't be any spaces and i'll probably have to reapply next year, but surely its worth a try. Anyway, i was wondering if anyone else was gonna do this and if anyone has previous experience of this, how do the conversations usually go? do they interview you on the phone?

hi, i was in the same situation as u last year, i did crap in my AS BCC but in the end came out with AAB, i phoned around like crazy, but it was a no go.
The problem is the unis get the results beforehand so they accept everyone whos got the grades who had offers, if not they go to the waiting list then to students like me and you which is very very rare. I would get ur results asap and phone every uni u can possibly think but bare in mind there's people who have got 5A's who will be tryin to phone to get in
You have the other option of wot i did if phoning doesnt work, gap year, gain more work ex, earns sum money, i also did 2 more AS-Levels, and now i have an offer from liverpool med school, hope u the best of luck

Did you get interviewed by anywhere? If so it might be worth calling, if not it's usually a no go.

That said, nothing ventured and all that...

Supanogi - it is extremely unlikely you will manage to gain a place at medical school this way. However, it is worth a try - you never know what might happen.

Obviously check UCAS clearing just in the one in a million chance there are a few places going. Newcastle is the only medical school on the last few years to have ever entered clearing to the best of my knowledge - so maybe it would be worth ringing them first.

Just be prepared for an extremely frustrating day of engaged phone lines and sorry we're full answers when you finally get through. Also be prepared for an abrupt response towards late in the day from a rather stressed admissions tutor.

Try not to get your hopes up too much and just concentrate on a great UCAS form for next year in the most likely scenario that you don't get a place this year - so you can go to a medical school of your choice.

Best of luck.

As usual Fluffy almost steals my words as I'm typing them. :p:

I'm sure she's stalking me.

I'm behind your curtains

And if by magic, the admissions officer for Barts and the London posted this on the admissionforum:

Admissions
Best thing to do is:

Check the UCAS site
Check the Schools' sites
Check the quality press

All of those will tell you who is in clearing.

It will save you stress, phone calls and money and achieves the same thing.

Example - last year we got around 10,000 calls a day for a few days. It's very very difficult to get through. And we weren't even in clearing. Save yourself from this by looking at the obvious places first (as above).

i like u will rpobably do tried to do everythin possible, i sent e-mails faxes, phoned for about 4-5 hours for a week even tried to bribe them (ok maybe not that). the problem is that it is so competative, u tell them ur grades they just answer back by sayin their sumone whos got more A's than me who cant get in so how am i?
Ono piece of advice the phones are jam packed when ringing the unis, get straight to the point dont give long winded explanations of anyhtin cause the admission tutors are prob really stressed aswell.
