blood tests

has anyone hear had a blood test? If so how much blood did they take for analysis?

when i had a blood test on monday, i thought that it would only be a very small amount, but the nurse took quite a bit! - about three tubes fulls

The thing is that i'm still feeling a little bit faint and queezy and my arm still hurts where she took the blood from is this normal?

She only took one tube, but i was only being tested for mono(glandar fever). The blood test can knock you about, i suggest eating sweet stuff, its probabily because your blood sugar has dropped cos you may be slightly in shock.

Not normal I would think, but the blood should have been made in the body just as quick.

2 tubes for me. Was not as bad as i thought, never concentrated on the blood.

It was actually 3 tubes for me!

I have to get my bloods taken all the time so yeah, a wee bit of pain afterwards is normal (at least for me anyway!).

I had six taken last time and the time before that. My arm brusises really badly becuase i hae small veins apparantly. Dont worry.

when people give blood, they give a LOT more than 3 tubes worth. you're not going to faint or feel too dizzy with that amount of 'blood loss'. Just drink some water, and have something to eat.

the number of vials of blood they take depends on a) the number of different tests they need to run and b) the types of test. were the vials of a different colour? the blood needs to mixed with different chemicals in the tubes for different tests.

you should be fine:smile:

my god, i'd hate to think hoe much they take when people give blood

i had two smaller tubes and one big one and when i saw how much they had taken i was in a bit of shock. I had never had a blood test before and so was a bit worried. Plus i would have liked someone i knew to have been there, i'm a bit of a baby when it comes to things like that

it depends on for what they're testing ur blood for! if they are going to perform many tests then prob half a test tube. Else even lesser.

they take a pint when you give blood.

how much is a tube? i think they take a tube also (for testing or something) but im not sure.

Reply 11

i think its ~15ml? cant me much more.

It depends on what they want to do. if the need serum the take a little more because the blood will have to be zentrifugated and then the take what is left on top. For other things they take the "whole" blood and mix it with chemicals.
You could have a little internal bruise in your arm that is hurting you. Nothing to worry about and as others have pointed out you give 1 pint when you give blood (the needle is vile, like a small knitting needle) and that is ok.
The body does not manage to "make" new blood in a few days, like someone suggested, that takes a while, but 3 tubes is not a lot.

each bottle is barely more than a couple of table spoons of blood.
the reason they took 3 bottles was to send it off for 3 different sorts of test.

the needle wasn't bad at all, i didn't mind that. It was the feeling when she drew out the blood that was horrible!
